Curriculum and Assessment Specialist

Opportunity for Professional Services Contract

The San Juan Bay Estuary Partnership is seeking to hire a Curriculum and Assessment Specialist to prepare the curriculum in Spanish for a Professional Certification on Participatory Bird Census and Characterization and Reduction of Microplastics Module.

The Corporation for the Conservation of the San Juan Bay Estuary is a 501©3 non-profit organization that operates the San Juan Bay Estuary Partnership, or Estuario. The Estuario became part of the National Estuary Program (NEP) in 1994 and is the only tropical and non-continental location within the NEP under Section 320 of the Clean Water Act. The Estuario’s mission is to restore and conserve the waters and associated ecosystems of the San Juan Bay Estuary and its watershed as a sustainable axis of social and economic development. Estuario’s work is guided by a master restoration plan known as the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) for the San Juan Bay Estuary.

The Curriculum and Assessment Specialist will design the courses such that the content and assessments are aligned with the Estuario’s mission and vision and are available in Spanish. The Service Provider is encouraged to collaborate with Estuario stakeholders and collaborators to develop a well-rounded program that focuses on content and practical experience and will be expected to contribute with new and trending educational topics on Participatory Bird Census and Characterization and Reduction of Microplastics that may include both in-person and virtual learning. Candidates must be comfortable reading and summarizing educational reports, research-based articles, and similar texts to a broader audience that show interest in conservation and management practices. Final products are expected to be completed before or by September 30, 2024.

Responsibilities:

  1. In collaboration with the project team, coordinates internal and external resources to develop and execute the Participatory Bird Census and Characterization and Reduction of Microplastics curriculum in Spanish for certification in the Estuario’s Citizen Science program.
  2. Conducts needs assessments to develop both Participatory Bird Census and Characterization and Reduction of Microplastics curricula for a Professional Certification Program and ensures that the program will remain within defined scope of a Professional Certification.
  3. Creates learning objectives, contents, methodology and assessment strategies that align with the SJBEP mission and meets the professional needs of the prospective citizens.
  4. Creates, maintains, and manages all project documentation relating to curriculum (syllabus, course content, presentations, activity guides, manuals, training materials, and assessment, theoretical foundations, vision, mission, goals, standards contents, content outline, student and teacher’s role, etc).
  5. Selects textbooks, manuals, videos and other teaching materials that support the curriculum.
  6. Leads in the design and development of synchronous, blended, and asynchronous learning curriculum.
  7. Tracks project and provides regular reports on project status to project teams and key stakeholders.
  8. Evaluates current field work activities (Participatory Bird Census and Characterization and Reduction of Microplastics) to include as part of the curriculum.
  9. Conducts analysis of the target audience for this certification

 

All service providers will be expected to:

  • Coordinate any and all meetings with stakeholders, the public, or Estuario team as necessary.
  • Attend any and all necessary meetings with Estuario to prepare and complete/ recieve approval of all project deliverables.
  • Submit regular written reports to Estuario as requested.
  • Provide own assistants, as needed.
  • Cover own business and travel expenses and tools, including transportation, computer, computer software and licenses, materials, etc.
  • Be able to work from outside the Estuario’s premises and be on-site as needed.
  • Be able to provide evidence of liability and worker’s compensation insurance.
  • Be in good standing with the Internal Revenue Service, both at the federal and state level.

 

Required Qualifications (Education and Experience):

  • Bachelor’s Degree Required, (Master’s or Doctorate is preferred) from an accredited university in the following areas: Education, Curriculum Studies, General Science, Biology or Environmental Science
  • Demonstrated experience in the design of Educational Guides, Curriculum Guides and Education and Research Activities, which includes but is not limited to, the design of learning objectives, course content, assessment tools, etc.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills in both English and Spanish
  • Demonstrated experience in environmental education projects is preferred
  • Availability to participate in research work with Estuary staff at various points in the metropolitan area
  • Have a means of transportation to participate in meetings and study tours at various points in the metropolitan area

 

Start Date:

Preferred start date is in June 2024.

Language Required:

All final products must be submitted in Spanish.
