Estuario Project Coordinator – Aquatic Debris

The San Juan Bay Estuary Partnership (Estuario) is seeking a qualified applicant to fulfill the Estuario Project Coordinator position focused in the Aquatic Debris area. This position will support the initiatives of the watershed oil recycling program across the watershed and the regional integrated resource and waste management plan.

 

ABOUT ESTUARIO

The Corporation for the Conservation of the San Juan Bay Estuary is a 501©3 non-profit organization that operates the San Juan Bay Estuary Partnership, or Estuario. The Estuario became part of the National Estuary Program (NEP) in 1994 and is the only tropical and non-continental location within the NEP under Section 320 of the Clean Water Act. The Estuario’s mission is to restore and conserve the waters and associated ecosystems of the San Juan Bay Estuary and its watershed as a sustainable axis of social and economic development. The work is guided by the Estuario Plan, a master restoration plan for the San Juan Bay Estuary officially known as the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP).

 

AQUATIC DEBRIS AREA:

The SJBE system faces a significant impact on its gray infrastructure, environment, and quality of life partially due to inadequate solid and waste management and improper disposal of used cooking oil and other waste from runoff (which include oils, paintings, detergents, etc.) and sanitary waters due to excessive development and illicit discharges throughout the basin. The Aquatic Debris area has the goal to improve habitat quality and enhance the aesthetic, recreational, and economic values of the SJBE by ensuring that the watershed is free of aquatic debris. The SJBE waste management platform seeks to attend to the waste management issues across the watershed generating awareness, carrying out educational initiatives, and developing the necessary infrastructure with different sectors. The development of educational campaigns and supporting communities and municipal recycling programs are essential to address strategic actions to implement measures to detect, correct, and control illegal dumping activities and comply with existing public policy.

The Estuario Project Coordinator – Aquatic Debris will support the watershed oil recycling program and Inter-Municipal Network, which provides an effective communication network to create a comprehensive waste management plan at the watershed basin level that identifies and facilitates actions that will allow the various sectors to maximize the use of their resources.

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Continue the coordination of the used oil recycling programs across the watershed.
  2. Coordinate and facilitate workshops and other activities focused on the reduction, reuse, recycling and correct disposal of waste, including cooking oil.
  3. Identify potential new areas to implement oil recycling programs.
  4. Develop an educational campaign that supports the recycling oil programs and promotes proposal disposal waste in collaboration with the Service Provider that will be developing and implementing the campaign.
  5. Document the results and impact metrics of the oil recycling program.
  6. Continue the efforts of the Inter-Municipal Network; including coordinating meetings, activities, and/or events as well documenting efforts and timely follow-up.
  7. Collaborate with the Public Policy Advisor to continue communication with the Inter-Municipal Network and tracking their progress to develop the Regional Integrated Resource and Waste Management plan.
  8. Create and design educational and informative content/material that supports the education and action platform aligned with the recommendations identified in the Watershed Basin Waste and Resources Management Analysis and Recommendations.
  9. Support the creation of strategies to help marinas, fishing villages and yacht clubs to reduce and prevent pollution.
  10. Support the Aquatic Debris Manager and the aquatic debris team in carrying out tasks related to: CCMP implementation related to Aquatic Debris, watershed oil recycling initiatives, regional integrated resource and waste management activities/ workshops/ events.

 

Required Qualifications (Education and Experience):

  1. Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, geography, planning, public policy, ecology, biology, or a related field is preferred.
  2. Professional experience, preferably in organizations related to the environment, planning, urban development, sustainability, waste management, etc.
  3. Knowledge of the theory, practices, principles and current technological developments of waste management, watershed science, estuaries, among others.
  4. Experience coordinating with multiple sectors to address environmental issues; including waste management challenges.
  5. Experience in managing complex or multiple projects, including financial management, and coordinating the work of other professionals.
  6. Years of work experience of 3-5 years.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Knowledge and understanding of the Estuario and its mission.
  2. Understanding of the environmental and social issues that affect communities in the San Juan Bay Estuary, focused on the complexity of the waste management sector.
  3. Strong interpersonal and problem- solving skills.
  4. Work well independently and as part of a team, in the field and behind a computer.
  5. Understand how to elevate the strategic model of integrated resource and waste management to a viral level through existing platforms.
  6. Ability to organize work effectively, determine priorities, set and monitor project schedules, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
  7. Ability to access and effectively use Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint; Adobe Acrobat; and other systems/ programs as required.
  8. Ability to develop and maintain effective work relationships with co-workers, professional peers, the general public and the ability to work effectively in teams and on individual assignments.
  9. Excellent communication skills, demonstrated competence in communicating technical information to general audiences, and strong interpersonal skills; including the ability to synthesize information, analyze data,
  10. Easily adapts to dynamic and changing situations.
  11. Available to work on weekends and evenings.
  12. Provide their own personal computer and transportation.

 

Start Date:

Ideally the candidate will be able to begin November 1, 2024.

 

Language Required:

Fully bilingual in English and Spanish.
