Estuario Weekly Update
Through our weekly update we share opportunities for collaboration, volunteering, and work; through initiatives and actions programmed for the benefit of the ecosystems and communities of the San Juan Bay Estuary. These activities, tips and information are for everyone’s benefit.
Evening talk and tour for children
We invite our estuarine children to bring their parents to the night talk and tour, Bats: friends of the forest and the Estuario; at the San Patricio State Forest, Saturday, October 29, 2022, from 5:30-7:30PM. We will start the afternoon with a talk, followed by the reading of the story of “Canito: el murciélago pescador (Canito, the fishing bat)“. We conclude with a night tour of the forest. Citizen scientists get certified in coastal resilience module
On Saturday, October 15, 2022, a group of estuarine citizen scientists completed workshops on coastal tropical ecosystems and sand dune restoration, placed wooden stakes for sand retention, and seeded coastal vegetation for sand stabilization. They also carried out microplastic identification and water quality monitoring activities. This event was carried out in collaboration with Vida Marina of the UPR in Aguadilla. The participants received their certification as citizen scientists in the coastal resilience thematic module. See the photo gallery here.
Estuario Summit 2022
Save the date! Next November 15, 16 and 17, join us at the Estuario Summit 2022; advancing the development of conceptual models of the San Juan Bay Estuary (SJBE) system as a guideline for conservation, research, water quality monitoring, and education programs.

Weekly water quality monitoring
Evaluation conducted Thursday, October 20, 2022. We have a green flag for the Condado Lagoon Natural Estuarine Reserve. Even though some stations in Lagoon did not meet the standard, their bacteriological counts were not too high. The beach in front of Nairn Street was the only one throughout the coast that did not meet the water quality standard.We recommend avoiding direct contact with the areas that did not exceed the standards and being attentive to precipitation events.
