Forum and presentation of Voces estuarinas
Estuario presented the newly-published oral history book Voces estuarinas on Tuesday, March 30 2021, with a live forum broadcasted through its Facebook Page.
The forum featured historians Javier E. Laureano and Ruth M. García Pantaleón, as well as collaborators Sonya Canetti, Director of Projects at the Fundación Puertorriqueña de las Humanidades and José Santiago Reillo, community leader at Península de Cantera. Estuario’s Executive Director, Brenda Torres Barreto, served as moderator.

Through oral history, Voces del Estuario explores the life experiences of residents that inhabit the communities of the San Juan Bay Estuary Watershed — rescuing the urban memories and natural heritage of Puerto Rico’s Metropolitan Area. This initiative is possible thanks to a grant provided by the Fundación Puertorriqueña de las Humanidades. Listen to the first episode here:
En el barrio Caimito, ubicado en las montañas del sur de San Juan, nace la quebrada Chiclana, una de las venas de agua que nutren el río Piedras, el cual desemboca en la Bahía de San Juan. En la ribera de la quebrada, la vecina Hidelisa Román y el líder comunitario Juan Cruz, disfrutaron de un entorno rico en flora y fauna. Vivieron allí períodos determinantes de la historia, transformación y justicia ambiental de esta comunidad. Aquí nos comparten sus relatos, luchas y experiencias.
Water Community Network
Estuario continues recruiting participants to its Water Community Network. These partners will collaborate with Estuario’s projects throughout 2021, including the creation of a Multijurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan, Green Infrastructure, and Illicit Discharge Identification initiatives.
