Exhibition El Estuario no está quieto

Focused on water and the communities surrounding the SJBE, the 2026 SJBEP Artists-in-Residence, Antonio Martorell and his Friends exhibition: El Estuario no está quieto (The Estuary is not quiet), offers us a special, multidisciplinary perspective deeply linked to our coexistence with the bodies of water in the SJBE watershed.

Through different artistic expressions, the collective exhibition invites us to reflect on our relationship with water, the communities that live and develop around it and the importance of restoring, protecting and conserving this vital resource.

There are only a few days left to visit it! The exhibition will be available at the Taller Comunidad La Goyco gallery until August 27, 2026. You can visit it from Monday to Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and on Saturdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Learn more about the exhibition and read the review written by its curator, Rebeca Noriega, here: https://estuario.org/el-estuario-no-esta-quieto/

Help us document restoration and conservation efforts in the SJBE watershed

Each year, we document habitat restoration and conservation efforts implemented within the SJBE watershed. Thus, we gather valuable information to support public investment in the region.

We urge all communities, organizations, or agencies carrying out restoration and conservation projects in the region to submit their projects for the period from October 1, 2025, to September 30, 2026, including pending projects.

These actions are reported to EPA and Congress. The form must be completed by September 30, 2026. We thank all the entities that are part of this effort. Access the form: HERE.

Reflection by Víctor Bonmatí, SJBEP intern in 2026

My name is Víctor Bonmatí and I am a student of International Relations at the University of Navarra. My professional aspirations are to work in a multinational NGO that operates in various areas, in international affairs and public policies, where I can analyze complex problems, work with different sectors and contribute to decision-making.

At the SJBEP, I was working to synthesize and analyze the scientific document “Economic Valuation Study” in order to use that information to transmit it to a wider audience. This document shows the economic value and benefits that nature provides in the metropolitan area through ecosystem services, which is why the SJBEP works to maintain it. The document is vital to demonstrate the importance of the SJBE to communities and to incorporate it into budgets, infrastructure decisions, zoning, and land-use planning.

I was also reviewing the comments of the communities of the metro zone in the CCMP (Review of the SJBE Comprehensive Management and Conservation Plan). These comments are essential for the SJBEP and the different communities to agree, since the CCMP is the master document that guides the work as an organization and as a partnership.

Apart from working in the office, I also had the opportunity to work in the field, taking samples of the water from the Condado Lagoon to do bacteriological analysis, and to go to the Torrecilla Lagoon in a motor boat to do a characterization and reduction of microplastics. Field experiences make work more dynamic and give you a perspective of the work of what you do in the office; it is very important to be able to see the results.

What surprised me the most about the internship were the findings of the “Economic Valuation Study”. The economic value of the SJBE is much higher than I expected, as is the wide spectrum of ecosystem services it impacts. This highlights the importance of what the SJBE is for Puerto Rico, not only as something moral (wanting to care for and maintain the environment), but also as something monetary.

This experience in the SJBEP has shown me the environmental importance of protecting ecosystems such as mangroves, wetlands and reefs, but I did not know the magnitude of its economic impact. It helped me strengthen my ability to analyze technical documents, identify relevant information, and communicate it in a simple and understandable way. It also allowed me to better understand how the environment, the economy, and public policy decisions are related. This is relevant to what I’m studying, helping me better understand how organizations that seek to make a public impact work and how they make decisions with limited resources.

Recycling Pop-up in Loíza

On Saturday, August 15, 2026, SJBEP was present at the Recycling Pop-Up in Loíza, with an educational table focused on highlighting diversion of vegetable oil initiatives and the importance of protecting and conserving the water quality. This event is held on a recurring basis every third Saturday of the month, in the Miguel Fuentes Pinet Park. #1, #2 and #5 plastics, aluminum, brass and corrugated cardboard are accepted.

Microplastics study

On Friday, August 14, 2026, we carried out the monthly field experience of the Microplastics Characterization and Reduction module of the SJBEP Certification for Citizen Scientists. We thank the volunteers who joined us in the collection and identification of microplastics throughout Laguna Torrecilla, increasing their understanding of the science and applying what they learned directly in the field. We also thank Captain David of Kap Inc., for his support in the experience.

Sign up for the next workshop on Characterization and Reduction of Microplastics. See more information below.

Weekly water quality monitoring results

Evaluation carried out on Thursday, August 20, 2026. We have a GREEN flag for the Condado Lagoon. We recommend, however, avoiding the areas that exceeded the “Beach Action Value” water quality parameter for 70 CFU/100 ML enterococci. Remember to avoid the water during rain events.
