Interpretive Planning and Content Development Specialist
The San Juan Bay Estuary Partnership (Estuario) is seeking qualified applicants for an interpretive planning and content development specialist.
The Corporation for the Conservation of the San Juan Bay Estuary is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that operates the San Juan Bay Estuary Partnership, or Estuario. Established in 1994, we are the only tropical and non-continental location within the National Estuary Program (NEP) under Section 320 of the Clean Water Act. The Estuario operates as a partnership to restore and conserve the waters and associated ecosystems of the San Juan Bay Estuary and its watershed as a sustainable axis of social and economic development. The partnership is a trusted regional science-based organization, supported by engaged stakeholders. Estuario’s work is guided by a master restoration plan known as the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) for the San Juan Bay Estuary.
In order to ensure successful execution of the work plan under Section 320 funding, in collaboration with its partners, Estuario will be developing an interpretive path and signage system along the Universidad de Puerto Rico (UPR) Jardín Botánico. This effort will provide environmental education support to increase community awareness.
The selected candidate shall provide interpretive planning and content development services for five (5) interpretive signs to be installed along the Jardín Botánico trail. The candidate shall collaborate with the Botanical Specialist to translate scientific and technical information into engaging, accessible, and educational content suitable for a general audience.
The candidate shall be responsible for developing interpretive themes, educational messaging with a cohesive storyline, and written content for each sign. Graphic design, layout, fabrication, and installation of the signs are not included within this scope of work.
Responsibilities:
The potential candidate will be requested to perform the following tasks by end of January 2027:
- Review the botanical and ecological assessment and collaborate with the Botanical Specialist to ensure scientific accuracy and relevance of the interpretive themes, educational messages, developed content for the five (5) interpretive signs, and other related tasks.
- Participate in stakeholder meetings, site visits, and project coordination meetings, as needed, to incorporate stakeholders’ recommendations into the developed content.
- Develop interpretive themes and framework for the determined trail for guided and/or self-guided tours
- Develop concept for each interpretive sign, identifying themes and educational objectives.
- Develop the written content in Spanish and English for each sign, including titles, body text (location, materials, and relevant information), captions, QR codes for self-guided tours, and other details as needed.
- Recommend visual elements for each sign (e.g., photographs, illustrations, diagrams, maps, icons) that would support the interpretive objectives.
- Coordinate meetings with Estuario staff and other stakeholders to discuss progress and present the plan and design for feedback and validation.
- Deliver final plan, print-ready text and content specifications for the five signs, ensuring obtaining any necessary permits, informing relevant contacts, and compliance with any relevant established requirements, rules, and/or regulations.
Required Qualifications (Education and Experience):
- Experience in interpretive planning, environmental education, science communication, or similar disciplines. Preferred experience in museums, parks, and/or botanical gardens.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Strong interpretive planning, educational content development, and storytelling skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both Spanish and English.
- Ability to translate scientific and ecological information into clear, engaging, and audience-appropriate content.
- Knowledge of environmental interpretation, visitor engagement, and informal education principles.
- Ability to develop interpretive themes, concepts, and educational objectives for signage and guided/self-guided experiences.
- Strong research, writing, editing, and content organization skills.
- Ability to collaborate with technical specialists and stakeholders and incorporate feedback into final products.
- Ability to recommend effective visual and interactive elements to support interpretive objectives.
- Strong project coordination, organization, and presentation skills.

- Cover Letter with short description (1–2 pages) of the proposed approach to complete the responsibilities outlined with an estimated schedule (completion by January 2027). The approach should include methods for translating scientific information into content that is engaging, accurate, and accessible to the general public.
- Fixed Cost Estimate for completion of all responsibilities outlined. The proposed cost should take into consideration all labor, materials, travel, administrative costs, and other expenses necessary to complete the work outlined. A detailed cost breakdown is not required. Reminder: the scope does not include graphic design, impression and installation of signage.
The final project schedule will be negotiated with the selected candidate and incorporated into the resulting agreement.
