Actualización semanal del Estuario

An estuarine greeting! Below, we share with you the events, initiatives, and training and collaboration opportunities scheduled in benefit of the waters, ecosystems and communities connected to the San Juan Bay Estuary.

Plan del Estuario review kick-off

On Tuesday, October 8, 2024, we kicked-off the revision of the San Juan Bay Estuary Comprehensive Conservation and management plan or Plan del Estuario.

The Plan del Estuario is a guide that establishes actions and public policy proposals to conserve the quality of water and habitats connected to the SJBE, promoting education, green infrastructure development and integrated solid waste management.

We urge all collaborators, community leaders, neighbors and stakeholders of the SJBE to participate in this process. To participate in the revision of the Plan del Estuario, register in: estuario.org.

Day of bats at the Estuario Family Day

On Saturday, October 5th, the Estuario Family Day took place at the Condado Lagoon Natural Estuarine Reserve. We started with a sports activity, where several participants joined, from all ages.

Then, we provided a tour focused on the bats of the Reserve, with the estuarine interpreter guides, Coral Avilés, Mario García and Eliezer Nieves. We had a game based on echolocation and along the way, the habits of these winged mammals and their importance for the ecosystem were explored. At the end of the tour, we reviewed what we learned with a trivia and ended with a reading of the story: Canito, el murciélago pescador.

The Family Day culminated with the screening of Cine del Estuario, which had an audience of about 52 people. See you at the next one!

Participatory bird census

On Wednesday, October 9, students from Ciencias Biológicas (CIBI) of the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras, participated in a bird census en route to complete their certification as citizen scientists with the SJBEP.

We thank Professor Melitza Nieves, for integrating the Participatory Bird Census module workshops and field trips into her CIBI curriculum, and our educators, Coral Avilés Santiago and Eliezer Nieves Rodríguez, for facilitating this certification to this new generation of university students.
