Estuario Weekly Update

An estuarine greeting! This week, the San Juan Bay Estuary Partnership (SJBEP) invites you to continue contributing to the resilience of your community, learning the results of the risk assessment of the San Juan metropolitan region, as part of the first Multijurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan in Puerto Rico. Participate in aquatic waste reduction and responsible recycling initiatives and continue your environmental training through the Certification for Citizen Scientists.

Multijurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan: Presentation of the results of the risk assessment of the metropolitan region of San Juan

The Autonomous Municipality of Guaynabo and the SJBEP invite you to the presentation of the results of your municipality’s risk assessment, part of the development of the first Multijurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan in Puerto Rico, on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. at Centro de Servicios Múltiples Petra Collazo Vega (see the location on Google Maps here).

Reducing aquatic waste in our estuarine waters

Take part in several recycling and waste reduction initiatives across the San Juan Bay Estuary (SJBE) watershed:

Electronics Recycling in the Municipality of San Juan

On Friday, November 14, 2025, the Municipality of San Juan will hold its annual event Reciclatón de Electrónicos, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Community Deposit Center in Coliseíto Pedrín Zorrilla. You will be able to correctly and responsibly divert electronic equipment that you no longer use, such as computers, cell phones, televisions, consoles and more.

Call for volunteers for the recycling stations at Taller Comunidad La Goyco

Join as a volunteer at one of the recycling stations of the Christmas Lighting of Taller Comunidad La Goyco, on Saturday, December 6, 2025. Your participation will count as field experience for the Microplastic Characterization and Reduction module of the Estuario Certification for Citizen Scientists. The shifts will be three hours each.

Weekly water quality monitoring

Evaluation carried out on Thursday, November 6, 2025. We have a GREEN flag for the Condado Lagoon. We recommend avoiding the areas that exceeded the «Beach Action Value» water quality parameter for enterococci of 70 CFU/100 ML. Remember to avoid the water during rain events.
