Project: Coastal Strengthening in the County Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve

ESTUARIO manages its action plan taking into account the water fiber of its watershed.

The Estuary conducts water quality studies that include weekly monitoring of bacteria indicative of contamination from untreated sewage. This section presents data and studies conducted in the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Reserve, along beaches within the estuary watershed, and on wastewater discharges associated with the pump operated by the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA) on De Diego Avenue.

We wish to share the scientific article entitled “Passive sampling of contaminants of emerging concern in a Caribbean urban estuary in Puerto Rico,” published in the peer-reviewed journal Marine Pollution Bulletin 213 (2025). The researchers of the study are Dr. Carlos J. Rodríguez Sierra and Dr. Imar Mansilla Rivera, professors in the Department of Environmental Health, School of Public Health, Medical Sciences Campus, and Dr. Jorge F. Bauzá-Ortega, scientific director of the Estuary.
