The San Juan Bay Estuary (hereinafter, Estuary) was created as part of an effort to identify, recommend and implement a management plan with actions aimed at improving and protecting the natural integrity of the estuary and its uses.
This report contains the results and conclusions of a contamination assessment of sediments and biota conducted in the San Juan Bay Estuary (SJBE) under the Project entitled – Estuarine Environmental Indicators for the San Juan Bay Estuary: Assessment of Sediment and Fish Tissue Contaminants (the “Assessment” or “Study”).

An estuary is a coastal area where freshwater flowing from rivers, streams, and rainwater runoff mixes with saltwater from the ocean. The San Juan Bay Estuary (SBS) system includes San Juan Bay, Condado Lagoon, San José and Los Corozos Lagoon, Torrecilla Lagoon, and Piñones Lagoon, as well as the channels that interconnect these bodies of water, such as the San Antonio Canal, Suárez Canal, and Martín Peña Channel.
