Civic participation is essential to the San Juan Bay Estuary Program and our initiatives to monitor water quality. Time invested by volunteer scientists strengthens our efforts to preserve the quality of our natural resources. Thanks to the volunteers, we generate key information about the conditions of the water in the most important ecosystem to the economy of Puerto Rico, the San Juan Bay Estuary.
Solid or liquid waste that flows into the rain sewage system flows directly into the water without receiving treatment. Detergents used to clean garages or mechanic shops are common contaminants. 80% of the waste found in our waters comes from actions taken on dry land.
