The San Juan Bay Estuary Partnership (SJBEP) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that designs, implements, and maintains restorations to improve the quality of the water and ecosystems within the Estuary of the San Juan Bay and its basin.

We lead several initiatives to monitor the quality of the water in our ecosystem in the following ways: 1. Bacteriological monitoring and notifying the public; 2. Water quality monitoring by volunteers; 3. Puerto Rico Water Quality Day.

Our Programs

We implement the Comprehensive Conservation Management Plan (CCMP) of the San Juan Bay Estuary through 11 programs based on science, education, art, and participation from the community. We invite you to explore your areas of interest and participate in our activities.

Community Resilience

The community resilience initiative of the San Juan Bay Estuary Program manages the quality of the water in a complete and comprehensive manner. The goal is to promote economic, cultural, and social development in the communities of the San Juan Bay Estuary without compromising the value of the ecological resources of the system and its services, and for the enjoyment of future generations. Estuary Resident Artists Program

At the San Juan Bay Estuary Partnership, we believe art is a fundamental strategy to develop knowledge through experience. Since 2019, Estuario has sponsored several projects by artists focused on the adaptation to climate change and the creation of blue economy. Through creative ways, we engage citizens in the process of achieving a resilient watershed.

With the Identification and Detection of Illegal Discharge of the Estuary project we were able to precisely locate areas of high contamination at the sub-basin level in all the hydrographic basins of the estuary in order to fix these areas.

Wildlife and Habitat

Aquatic Debris

Solid or liquid waste that flows into the rain sewage system flows directly into the water without receiving treatment. Detergents used to clean garages or mechanic shops are common contaminants. 80% of the waste found in our waters comes from actions taken on dry land. The remaining 20% comes from activities on the water such as cruises and other vessels. Learn how to dispose of waste correctly to protect our waters.
