Public Involvement Specialist
The San Juan Bay Estuary Partnership (Estuario) is seeking qualified applicants for the Public Involvement Specialist. This service provider will be responsible for implementing educational programs and public ABOUT THE SAN JUAN BAY ESTUARY PARTNERSHIP
The Corporation for the Conservation of the San Juan Bay Estuary is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that operates the San Juan Bay Estuary Partnership, or Estuario. Established in 1994, we are the only tropical and non-continental location within the National Estuary Program (NEP) under Section 320 of the Clean Water Act. The Estuario operates as a partnership committed to their collective responsibility to restore and conserve the waters and associated ecosystems of the San Juan Bay Estuary and its watershed as a sustainable axis of social and economic development. Estuario’s work is guided by a master restoration plan known as the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) for the San Juan Bay Estuary.
Responsibilities:
The service provider will execute tasks related to the Public Involvement Specialist primarily under three projects: Citizen Science Certification, Co-Management of the Condado Lagoon, Estuarine Education for Community Awareness. This includes:
- Recruit and engage groups, institutions and/or citizens in the other modules of citizen science.
- Support the Education and Citizen Science Manager in consistently improving the Citizen Science Certification process, and its educational content/ curriculum.
- Collaborate with the Communications team as needed to promote registration in workshops or webinars.
- Develop and carry out an effective and coherent action plan for Activity 11: Co-Management of the Condado Lagoon Natural Estuarine Reserve in collaboration with the Estuario Project Coordinator(s)- Public Outreach and Education and Environmental Educator
- Develop educational materials to share with users of the Lagoon and the general public focused on the importance of protecting and conserving the Condado Lagoon and the San Juan Bay Estuary ecosystem in general as needed.
- Develop and implement a plan to engage groups such as Scouts, Water Community Network, Public and Private sector, academia in all activities
- Carry out activities in representation of the Estuario to celebrate annual environmental awareness days including, but not limited to: Water Quality Day, Earth Day, World Wetlands Day, Manatee Day, World Water Day, etc.
- Support the planning and implementation of National Estuary Week.
- Carry out educational and experiential field trips, activities, or interpretative tours to different audiences (Water Community Network, users of Urban Forest Network, private and public sector, businesses, NGO’s, tourism industry, academia, Scouts, etc).
- Collaborate with members of the Urban Forest Network, providing them with more passports, carrying out activities, and orienting them as part of the Network as needed
- Support the coordination of the 16th annual Puerto Rico Water Quality Monitoring Day as needed.
- Provide environmental education and outreach support to all activities as needed
Required Qualifications (Education and Experience):
- Over 5 years in education and public involvement.
- Research-Action oriented academic institution or a professional with a Masters’ Degree required/Doctoral Degree preferred in Education, Environmental Sciences, Social Sciences, or Ecology from an accredited university
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Experience in developing and carrying out successful projects that involve community-based participatory (teaching and learning) processes.
- Experience working with Estuario’s monitoring and volunteers’ projects.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; in both languages, English and Spanish.
- Excellent computer skills and proficient in excel, word, power point, and social networks, and other virtual platforms/software to support engagement, participatory process activities.
- Strong understanding of environmental issues and of Puerto Rico’s biodiversity and estuarine ecosystems.
- Must be a motivated self-starter and team player.
- Must have project management skills, including multi-tasking abilities.
- Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
- Flexibility to meet changing project priorities and demands.
- Own transportation and computer.
Language Required:
English and Spanish.
