Estuario Project Coordinator- Public Outreach and Education
The San Juan Bay Estuary Partnership (Estuario) is seeking qualified applicants for the Estuario Project Coordinator- Public Outreach and Education to work onsite at the Condado Lagoon Natural Estuarine Reserve to educate on the importance of the Lagoon and engage with its users and the general public.
In 2013, through Law No. 112, the Condado Lagoon was designated an estuarine reserve by the Government of Puerto Rico. This legislation established a commission for community management, and the development of the Conservation Management Plan for the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Reserve. The co-management of the lagoon is guided by this plan and is meant to attend to the critical issues impeding the sustainability of the management plan through actions related to Coordination, Education and Awareness, Vigilance and Compliance, Fiscal status, and Ordinate of Aquatic Uses.
The Estuario Project Coordinator for Public Engagement will work onsite at the Condado Lagoon and carry out an ongoing education and awareness program emphasizing the importance of protecting and conserving the Lagoon through activities and events. These activities will implement actions that restore and conserve the quality of the Condado Lagoon and actively engage the public in water restoration.
ABOUT THE SAN JUAN BAY ESTUARY PARTNERSHIP
The Corporation for the Conservation of the San Juan Bay Estuary is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that operates the San Juan Bay Est4uary Partnership, or Estuario. Established in 1994, we are the only tropical and non-continental location within the National Estuary Program (NEP) under Section 320 of the Clean Water Act. The Estuario operates as a partnership committed to their collective responsibility to restore and conserve the waters and associated ecosystems of the San Juan Bay Estuary and its watershed as a sustainable axis of social and economic development. Estuario’s work is guided by a master restoration plan known as the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) for the San Juan Bay Estuary.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and carry out a plan of action that is approved by the Supervisor based on high usage times to represent the Estuario onsite and carry out activities/events at the Laguna de Condado
- Identify, coordinate, and carry out activities that would advance the implementation of the CCMP and/or the Conservation Management Plan for the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Reserve
- Inform, educate, and engage the public around restoration and ecological aspects of the Condado Lagoon during high usage times
- Develop and share educational material for targeted audiences (business owners, partner organizations, volunteers, outdoor recreation audiences, etc) that emphasizes the importance of the protecting and conserving the Condado Lagoon for the San Juan Bay Estuary ecosystem in coordination with the Education team
- Coordinate and carry out tabling events to share educational materials and engage with the users of the Lagoon and the general public
- Conduct an inventory of flora and fauna in collaboration with Condado Lagoon users and the community and develop educational material from this inventory to share with the public
- Coordinate all meetings with the Amigos de la Laguna, including developing the agenda, sending invitations, reserving the meeting space, documenting meeting minutes, and sharing relevant materials prior to the meeting.
- Coordinate with the Communications team to promote activities
- Coordinate and carry out all CineEstuario events
- Coordinate with all relevant stakeholders to ensure activities/events have the required permits and/or documentation
- Carry out outputs/deliverables related to the position as identified in the work plan.
Required Qualifications (Education and Experience):
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences, Biology, Ecology, Education, or related fields.
- Strong understanding of the estuarine ecosystems, particularly the San Juan Bay Estuary and the Condado Lagoon.
- Familiar with the Comprehensive and Management Plan for the SJBE.
- Excellent public speaking
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Minimum 4 years of experience in community engagement, environmental education, or event coordination.
- Proven track record of organizing public outreach activities, workshops, or tabling events.
- Experience working with diverse stakeholders including government agencies, nonprofits, and local businesses.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both Spanish and English.
- Ability to effectively engage and educate the public on ecological and restoration topics.
- Comfortable speaking to groups and facilitating workshops or community meetings.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to develop and execute action plans based on Education Manager input.
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal teams (Education, Communications) and external partners.
- Leadership skills to mobilize volunteers and community members.
- Willingness to work outdoors during high-usage times (weekends, holidays, evenings).
- Comfortable representing Estuario onsite and interacting with Lagoon users.
Language Required:
Fully bilingual in English and Spanish.
