The duration of the project is approximately 18 months, and the Artists in Residence Coordinator should be available to start by October 21, 2024.
ABOUT ESTUARIO
The Corporation for the Conservation of the San Juan Bay Estuary is a 501©3 non-profit organization that operates the San Juan Bay Estuary Partnership, or Estuario. The Estuario became part of the National Estuary Program (NEP) in 1994 and is the only tropical and non-continental location within the NEP under Section 320 of the Clean Water Act. The Estuario’s mission is to restore and conserve the waters and associated ecosystems of the San Juan Bay Estuary and its watershed as a sustainable axis of social and economic development. The work is guided by the Estuario Plan, a master restoration plan for the San Juan Bay Estuary officially known as the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP).
ESTUARIO’S ARTIST IN RESIDENCE INITIATIVE
For the Estuario, arts and culture act as a driving force in the generation and implementation of ideas and projects aimed at the resilience of the San Juan Bay Estuary (SJBE) system. Estuario began its Artist in Residence initiative in 2018 to engage citizens in meaningful ways by integrating cultural vibrancy through community participation and artistic expression, particularly after hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017. Through dialogue and exchange of ideas about the restoration and conservation of the estuarine ecosystem, resident artists manage to increase environmental awareness and facilitate the development of a resilient basin.
Resident artists immerse themselves into a particular community and produce an artistic piece that communicates how the community’s interests and needs relate to a specific project. This year, the selected artist will support the long-term vitalization of the Juan Méndez Creek. This project complements key infrastructure projects in the region, such as the dredging of Caño Martín Peña, and seeks to create awareness among community residents, elected officials, and state and municipal agency personnel within the SJBE watershed as to the negative impacts of the channelization of rivers and creeks, and nature-based alternatives to concrete channelization and their benefits. The resident artist will develop and implement an artistic project that involves and focuses on the communities affected by the Juan Méndez Creek.
The Artist-in-Residence Coordinator will collaborate with Estuario’s key personnel to lead the coordination efforts related to the Artist-in-Residence initiative, from artist recruitment and selection, up to the close-out of the initiative.
