Estuario weekly Update

Estuarine greetings! Below, we share the events, initiatives, and opportunities available in benefit of the communities and ecosystems of the San Juan Bay Estuary. Have a great weekend!

Family Day at Condado Lagoon Natural Estuarine Reserve

Celebrate Dad with the San Juan Bay Estuary Partnership, at the upcoming Family Day at the Condado Lagoon Natural Estuarine Reserve, on Saturday, June 1, 2024.

Everyone is invited! We will have the following activities:

  • Kayak tour (specific terms apply) at 2:00 p.m.
  • Sports activity for dad at 4:00 p.m.
  • Scavenger hunt (with Green Contact hours) at 5:00 p.m.
  • Endemic birds workshop (with Green Contact hours) at 6:00 p.m.

After the endemic birds workshop, Cine del Estuario presents: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse; at 7:00 p.m. in the Jaime Benítez Park of the Condado Lagoon Natural Estuarine Reserve. The film will be screened in Spanish, with English subtitles. As always, this feature is free of cost. Bring your blanket or chair!

Estuarine Professional Training Workshops for Educators

The San Juan Bay Estuary Partnership invites educators of all levels to participate in the Estuarine Professional Training Workshop Series of 2024. We will have the following workshops:

Green Estuary: Discovering the Biodiversity of Urban Forests; Saturday, June 1, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Blue Estuary: Coastal Ecosystems, Biodiversity and Water Quality; Saturday, July 13, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Both workshops will be held in the Condado Lagoon Natural Estuarine Reserve. We will discuss concepts of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, their biodiversity, and conservation.

A certificate of contact hours will be given to those who participate in the entirety of each workshop (2.5 hours). Sign up today, at estuario.org/eventos.

Call for Estuario Artists-in-Residence

The Estuario is looking for proposals from artists to support the restoration work of the Juan Méndez Creek. See the call, in estuario.org/empleos.

Curriculum and Assessment SpecialistThe San Juan Bay Estuary Partnership is seeking to hire a Curriculum and Assessment Specialist to prepare the curriculum in Spanish for a Professional Certification on Participatory Bird Census and Characterization and Reduction of Microplastics Module.

Video Production Services—Request for Quote – The San Juan Bay Estuary Partnership, Estuario, is looking to engage a professional consultant(s) to provide video production services to produce a video for the Estuario’s 30th anniversary.

Citizen Scientists Certification

Water Quality Monitoring Module:

Coastal Resilience Module:

The Citizen Scientists Certification through the Coastal Resilience Module counts toward Green Contact (Contacto Verde) hours or community service, as applicable, for high school students. See more information at: estuario.org/estudiantes.

Weekly Water Quality Monitoring

Evaluation carried out on Thursday, May 23, 2024. We have a RED flag for the Condado Lagoon. We recommend avoiding the areas that exceeded the “Beach Action Value” water quality standard for enterococci of 70 CFU/100 ML. Have a good weekend.
