The Estuario is looking to hire a Youth Engagement Coordinator that will recruit high school students to participate in the Citizen Science Coastal Resilience Module.
Established in 1994, the Estuario is an alliance of public and private entities committed to their collective responsibility to restore and conserve the waters and associated ecosystems of the San Juan Bay Estuary and its watershed to ensure the prosperity of our tropical ecosystems, the health of our communities and the vitality of the economy in the San Juan Bay Estuary and its urban watershed. The Estuario office serves as a catalyst and facilitator of this alliance and operates as a regional, trustworthy, and science-based non-profit organization registered with the Puerto Rico Department of State. Estuario’s work as a partnership focuses on implementing the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) for the San Juan Bay Estuary.
The Youth Engagement Coordinator will promote the Citizen Science Coastal Resilience Module by recruiting high school students and visiting public and private schools that are located on the coast of the San Juan Bay Estuary. This position will work closely with community partners and stakeholders to recruit new students, as well as parents and teachers as needed to increase access and opportunities for technical and scientific skills that the participants may use in their future careers. The Youth Engagement Coordinator will encourage students to participate in the module while completing their green/community hours. The person selected for this position should enjoy working with youth and have the ability to develop and implement creative strategies to recruit a youth audience for this certification.
The Youth Engagement Coordinator will work closely with the Coastal Resilience Youth Coordinator to plan, schedule, and offer the workshops and field experiences required for the green/community hours. This position also requires that all interactions with the schools and students be documented before, during and after the completion of the certification, as well as follow-up meetings to evaluate recruitment success.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepare a detailed project work plan; set and execute deadlines established.
- Identify and meet with potential public and private schools, directors and/or teachers to promote the coastal resilience workshops and field experiences among high schools.
- Maintain and manage all project documentation and databases (phone calls, meetings to describe the certification, recruitment lists, scheduling events with schools, coordination with the other coordinators, etc.)
- Prepare and conduct outreach events in public and private schools to recruit students for the Citizen Science Coastal Resiliency module.
- Facilitate program orientation sessions for directors, teachers, students, and parents.
- Facilitate collaboration opportunities between the Coastal Resilience team, project stakeholders and schools to further reach of the Citizen Science Module.
- Support in planning and scheduling workshops and field experiences in coordination with the Coastal Resilience Youth Coordinator.
- Follow the curriculum objectives and education curriculum for the successful completion of the certification program.
- Foster and maintain relationships with students, parents and school directors, including regular, effective communication with school leadership to ensure timely recruitment of participants and implementation of the certification workshops and field experiences.
- Provide detailed lists of students recruited as well as documents certification completion.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Worker, behavioral science, public administration and/or relevant field preferred, plus two years of directly-related experience working with young people. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted, as long as it directly relates to the essential duties and responsibilities.
Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience of community organizing.
A strong desire for supporting and empowering young people with these lived experiences is required.
