PODCAST PRODUCTION AND CONSULTATION—BIL

Estuario seeks proposals from qualified firms/individuals for Podcast Services to document the restoration of the Juan Mendez Creek under the funds of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). See the listing here.

STAKEHOLDER AND ENGAGEMENT COORDINATOR 

The Stakeholder and Engagement Coordinator supports Estuario’s role as a regional convener, catalyst, and facilitator to restore and maintain clean waters that support thriving ecosystems, healthy communities, and a vibrant ecosystem in the San Juan Bay Estuary and its urbanized watershed.  See the listing here. 

CITIZEN SCIENCE AND EDUCATION MANAGER

The Citizen Science and Education Manager is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Estuario’s capacity building efforts and education efforts at a regional level. This position will help develop and communicate data related to baseline conditions through habitat, restoration, or coastal resilience initiatives, volunteer monitoring, and other data sets through education efforts. Family Day at Condado Lagoon Natural Estuarine Reserve

The Family Day is back! On Saturday, November 4, 2023, starting at 2:00 p.m., come to our informational table, join us for a hike through the preserve (4:30 p.m.), participate in a trivia game (6:00 p.m.), and enjoy the screening of Cine del Estuario (7:00 p.m.). Don’t miss it!

Cine del Estuario

Don’t miss the screening of Lightyear, on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. in the Jaime Benítez Park of the Condado Lagoon Natural Estuarine Reserve. The film will be shown with Spanish audio and English subtitles. This event is free of charge. Bring your blanket or chair!

Meeting of Amigos de la Laguna

On Wednesday, November 8, 2023, we will have the next meeting of Amigos de la Laguna, at 6:00 p.m. in the Jaime Benítez Park of the Condado Lagoon Natural Estuarine Reserve. Amigos de la Laguna is a community action group that collaborates with the Estuario, the DNER and the Municipality of San Juan in the management actions of the Estuarine Reserve. This meeting is open to neighbors, users and allies of the Lagoon.

The meeting will have a virtual space through Zoom, which you can access directly through this link. We look forward to seeing you!

  • November 9 – Introductory Workshop on Water Quality Monitoring; with Coral Avilés, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. via Zoom

Microplastics Characterization and Reduction Module:

  • November 16 – Workshop on introduction to microplastics and other aquatic waste; with Coral Avilés, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. via Zoom

Participatory Bird Census Module:

  • November 17 – Field trip: participatory bird census; with Coral Avilés and Eliezer Nieves, from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. in San Juan’s Central Park

Coastal Resilience Module:

Additional Activities & Opportunities

Publication of the draft for public hearings of the Plan for Mitigation, Adaptation and Resilience to Climate Change in Puerto Rico:

On October 10, 2023, the DNER published the draft of the Climate Change Mitigation, Adaptation and Resilience Plan in Puerto Rico. This draft was developed by the Committee of Experts and Advisors on Climate Change (CEACC), and sets out actions for the reduction of risks caused by climate change in multiple sectors throughout the Island, as established by Law 33-2019.

During the months of November and December, public hearings will be held to allow the Puerto Rican people to present observations and recommendations to be incorporated into the Plan. The DNER is currently receiving records to appear and depose during the hearings. Click here to download the Plan, view the public hearing dates, learn more, and register.

On Saturday, November 4, 2023, during the Community Fair of Taller Comunidad La Goyco, join our collaborators of the campaign Que no toque el piso ni llegue al agua, to the following workshops:

  • From plastic to practical: create your festive birthday tablecloth postcard; with Columpio Colectivo, at 11:00 a.m. in the Dance Hall
  • Glass workshop—make your Christmas gifts from repurposed bottles; with Michelle Malley and Aixa Campos, at 11:00 a.m. in the Art Hall

Monitoreo bacteriológico semanal

Evaluation carried out on Thursday, November 2, 2023. We have a GREEN flag for the Condado Lagoon Natural Estuarine Reserve. All coastal stations met the Beach Action Value water quality standard of 70 CFU/100 ML. Remember to avoid the water during rain events. Have a good weekend!
