Estuario Weekly Update

Estuarine greetings! Below, we share opportunities for collaboration, volunteerism, and training for this week, through initiatives and actions programmed for the benefit of the ecosystems of the San Juan Bay Estuary and its communities.

World Wetlands Day

On Thursday, February 2, 2023, we celebrate World Wetlands Day! We’ve taken the opportunity to highlight the wetlands of the San Juan Bay Estuary, their impact and importance.  Don’t miss the workshop: Los humedales de la cuenca del Estuario: Conociendo su geografía, ecosistemas y biodiversidad, at 7:00 p.m. through Zoom, with Eliezer Nieves, specialist in education and citizen participation. On Wetlands Day, share your support to the restoration of the wetlands of planet Earth, with the tags #GeneracionRestauracion and #ParaHumedales in your favorite social network.

Certification for Citizen Scientists

A new round of elective workshops of the Estuary Citizen Science Certification Program begins, for the modules of Participatory Bird Censuses, Water Quality, Characterization and Reduction of Microplastics, and  Coastal Resilience.

The dates of the workshops will be as follows:

  • Conociendo las aves acuáticas de los humedales del Estuario – Wednesday, February 1, 2023, 7:00 p.m.
  • Calidad de agua en el Estuario: análisis bacteriológico– Wednesday, February 8, 2023, 7:00 p.m.
  • Caracterización de microplásticos en agua– Wednesday, February 15, 2023, 7:00 p.m.
  • Evaluación ecológica del arrecife de coral – Wednesday, February 22, 2023, 7:00 p.m.

The workshops will be provided virtually, via Zoom.

Educational day at the Condado Lagoon Natural Estuarine Reserve

On Saturday, February 4, 2023, don’t miss the next educational day at the Laguna del Condado Estuarine Nature Reserve in Jaime Benítez Park!

There’ll be informative tables, treasure hunts, an interpretive walk through the reserve, and salsa and Puerto Rican folk music classes. The documentary Amigos del Fortín San Jerónimo will also be presented. Then, at 7:00 p.m., stay for the Cine del Estuario screening!

Cine del Estuario

On Saturday, February 4, 2023, after the educational day at the Condado Lagoon Natural Estuarine Reserve, Cine del Estuario presents: Jurassic World: Dominion;  at 7:00 p.m.  in Jaime Benítez Park. This screening is free of charge. Bring a blanket or chair!

Water Quality Day

Have you chosen your water body yet? The 15th Water Quality Day will be Saturday, April 1, 2023.  Save the date!

Weekly Water Quality Monitoring

Evaluation conducted Thursday, January 26, 2023.  We have a GREEN flag for the Condado Lagoon Natural Estuarine Reserve. We recommend always avoiding direct contact with water bodies during rainfall events (and at least 48 hours after).  

The actions for the restoration and management of bodies of water within the San Juan Bay Estuary Watershed are possible thanks to the public. Donations to the San Juan Bay Estuary Program are deductible from Puerto Rico and US tax returns.
