Estuario Weekly Update

Happy holidays! May this season be of great joy for you and your family and friends, and may you have a happy and prosperous 2023. Best wishes from the San Juan Bay Estuary Program!

Here are the volunteering, training, and contract opportunities for this week:

Gamaliel Pagán Hernández Christmas Bird Counts

We continue with the Gamaliel Pagán Hernández Christmas Bird Counts. To the citizen scientists who accompanied us this week in Bosque de Punta Salinas, Quebrada Chiclana in Caimito and Lago Las Curías: an estuarine shoutout!  There are still spaces available, between now and Thursday, January 5, 2023.  Choose your date and register today, at  https://estuario.org/events/.

Cine del Estuario

NOTICE: There will be no Cine del Estuario screening during this month of January.  We return on Saturday, February 4, 2023, with Jurassic World Dominion, at 7:00 p.m. at the Jaime Benitez Park of the Condado Lagoon Natural Estuarine Reserve. See you then!

Contract opportunities

Presentation of the educational campaign Deja una huella limpia in Piñones

On Tuesday, December 20, 2022, the non-profit organization LimPiaR inaugurated the educational campaign Deja una huella limpia, in a meeting with merchants from the community of Piñones and the Municipality of Loíza. The campaign aims to promote a standard and culture of environmental responsibility in the multiple commercial and public sectors of the Piñones community. Weekly water quality monitoring

Evaluation conducted on Thursday, December 22, 2022.  We have a RED flag for the Condado Lagoon Natural Estuarine Reserve and Balneario El Escambrón. We recommend avoiding direct contact in these areas. Similarly, we recommend avoiding direct contact with any body of water during rainfall events and at least 48 hours afterwards.

The actions for the restoration and management of bodies of water within the San Juan Bay Estuary Watershed are possible thanks to the public. Donations to the San Juan Bay Estuary Program are deductible from Puerto Rico and US tax returns.
