The San Juan Bay Estuary Program (Estuario) is seeking a Community Resilience Coordinator in the area of arts and culture to support the efforts of the San Juan Bay Estuary for the revitalization of communities and restoration of water bodies in the estuary system. For these purposes, the coordinator will support the selection and coordination of projects under the Artists-in-Residence initiative. These artists support the empowerment process together with expert scientists in the area of water quality. The coordinator will manage the Artists-in-Residence in their selected communities and coordinate activities related to their projects and promote their work throughout the watershed through strategies such as an exhibit.
The San Juan Bay Estuary Program (Estuario) is a private non-profit organization that designs, implements, and provides restorative maintenance in order to improve the water quality and ecosystems within its eight municipalities. Estuario’s mission is to restore and conserve the water quality in the Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan ecosystem as a sustainable hub of social and economic development.
Estuario is the only tropical estuary in the National Estuary Program, providing not only environmental and resiliency programs, but also educational and recreational activities that support thriving communities.
The Estuario’s work is guided by the development and implementation of the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP). In collaboration with local, state, and federal agencies, NGOs, academic, and business leaders, the Estuario works to restore and conserve water quality in the San Juan Bay Estuary ecosystem. The Estuario works to build partnerships and leverage federal funding for regional-scale restoration, water quality improvement, and resilience-building projects.
For the Estuario, culture acts as a driving force in the generation and implementation of ideas and projects aimed at the resilience of the San Juan Bay Estuary system. Sustainable development in resilient communities is guided by empowerment, training, awareness and evaluation activities, which use artistic presentations and public art as a communication strategy, among other culturally competent expressions to the community. The Estuario supports handicrafts, music, theater, as well as painting, among other creative industries in the empowerment process.
Our goal is to economically, culturally and socially develop the communities of the San Juan Bay Estuary system without compromising the value of the ecological resources of this system and its services, nor the development possibilities for future generations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Actively work with curators, designers and mediators in the creation and production of creative projects with the community; as well as temporary exhibitions
- Carry out the Artist-in-Residence program, including promotion of the program and all activities and events, selection of candidates, coordination of artists campaign with the communities, develop and carry out exhibit and other strategies to promote and raise awareness of the projects
- Serve as an intermediary between the Artist in and the community in which they work
- Support general Community Resilience Initiatives as needed
- Provide support in carrying out and coordinating Estuario’s events and activities with communities as needed
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree, or graduate studies, from an accredited university in the areas of Plastic Arts, Hospitality and Culinary Arts, Economic Development, Pedagogy, Geography, Social Work or other related fields
- Experience managing projects comprehensively, incorporating the needs and interests of various sectors.
- Experience managing youth groups.
- Experience in projects aimed at the community and its welfare, sustainability, work in the metropolitan area with communities and project management.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
- Knowledge and understanding of the Estuario and its mission
- Disposition for teamwork (curators, assistants and interns).
- Excellent computer skills and proficient in excel, word, power point, and social networks, as well as Canvas and Google Forms.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; in both languages, English and Spanish.
- Understanding of environmental and social issues in the estuary
- Must be a motivated self-starter and team player
- Must have project management skills including multi-tasking abilities
- Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills
- Flexibility to meet changing project priorities and demands
- Available to work on weekends and evenings.
- Provide their own personal computer and transportation.

Commensurate with experience.
