Estuary Weekly Update
The San Juan Bay Estuary Partnership (SJBEP) continues to strengthen the connection between community and nature through educational experiences, ecological restoration, and citizen preparation. This week, we share recent initiatives, upcoming events, and helpful resources to strengthen the resilience of our communities and care for our natural environment.
Family Day
Don't miss the next Family Day at the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Natural Reserve, on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at Jaime Benítez Park. This October, we celebrate the bats of the San Juan Bay Estuary (SJBE), with activities for the whole family, starting at 3:30 pm We will have a sports activity, an educational talk about bats, the reading of the story: Canito, the fishing bat and educational trivia.
The family day is free of charge. We have opportunities to accumulate Contacto Verde or community service hours, as applicable. See more detailed information in estuario.org/eventos.
Estuary Cinema
Cine del Estuario presents: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice; on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at 7:00 pm in the Jaime Benítez Park of the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Natural Reserve. The film will be screened in Spanish, with English subtitles. This feature is free of charge. Bring your blanket or chair.
Presentation on the development of Puerto Rico's first Multijurisdictional Risk Mitigation Plan
The SJBEP invites you to learn about the results of the risk assessment of the San Juan metropolitan region, a key step in the development of Puerto Rico's first Multijurisdictional Risk Mitigation Plan.
The presentation will be on Monday, October 6, 2025, from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm at the College of Engineers and Surveyors of Puerto Rico (CIAPR), Hato Rey, San Juan (00918). Join the conversation to build a safer metropolitan region. Everyone is invited.

Planting of coastal vegetation in Lagoon County
On Friday, September 26, 2025, a field experience for the Estuary Certification for Citizen Scientists' Coastal Resilience module was held in the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Natural Reserve. On this occasion, a volunteer, together with the SJBEP team, planted six trees, including cow tree, cayure, ambay pumpwood and green buttonwood. They also monitored the state of the present vegetation, measuring height and thickness.
The planting was carried out among dying almond trees, observing that button mangroves previously planted in the area have managed to establish themselves successfully. These actions contribute to the ecological restoration of the Reserve and strengthen the resilience of our coastal ecosystems. Thank you to citizen scientist, George Hernandez, for his support!

Weekly water quality monitoring
Evaluation conducted on Thursday, October 2, 2025. We have a GREEN flag for Condado Lagoon. However, we recommend avoiding the areas that exceeded the Beach Action Value water quality parameter for enterococci of 70 CFU/100 ML. Remember to avoid the water during rain events.
