CONTRACT ANNOUNCEMENT: ESTUARIO PROJECT COORDINATOR — MONITORING

The San Juan Bay Estuary Program (Estuario) is a private non-profit organization that designs, implements, and provides restorative maintenance in order to improve the water quality and ecosystems within its eight municipalities.   Estuario’s mission is to restore and conserve the water quality in the Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan ecosystem as a sustainable hub of social and economic development.

Estuario is the only tropical estuary in the National Estuary Program, providing not only environmental and resiliency programs, but also educational and recreational activities that support thriving communities.

The Estuario’s work is guided by the development and implementation of the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP). In collaboration with local, state, and federal agencies, NGOs, academic, and business leaders, the Estuario works to restore and conserve water quality in the San Juan Bay Estuary ecosystem. The Estuario works to build partnerships and leverage federal funding for regional-scale restoration, water quality improvement, and resilience-building projects.

The San Juan Bay Estuary Program (Estuario) is seeking qualified applicants to serve as Estuario Project Coordinator for Water Quality Monitoring efforts within the SJBE system. The successful applicant will have demonstrated experience and effectiveness implementing monitoring projects, training volunteers, managing data, and communicating findings. focused on the watershed, conducting monitoring to assess water quality and flow conditions in local creeks. This position will work under the supervision of the Scientific Director, serving as a liaison to our many Volunteer Monitoring Program volunteers. The ideal candidate is energetic, collaborative, organized, self-directed, and focused.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Carry out Water Quality Monitoring efforts based on the “Quality Assurance Project Plan for the San Juan Bay Estuary Program”, as approved by the US EPA
  • Volunteer and Field Staff Coordination: Recruit, train and coordinate volunteer habitat and water quality monitors. Coordinate equipment maintenance and repairs, laboratory analysis, and other aspects of the monitoring. Provide oversight of volunteer monitors for technical and safety aspects.
  • Fieldwork: Lead staff and volunteers in conducting water quality and flow monitoring in local creeks and habitat monitoring in the bay.
  • Data Management: Manage monitoring and quality assurance data using spreadsheets and databases. Work with the Scientific Director and other staff to interpret data and write content for project summary reports and for the public.
  • Coordination: Coordinate sampling dates, storage, labeling and shipment of samples. Conduct yearly inventory of monitoring supplies and request refills as needed. 
  • Support the implementation of work plans by carrying out outputs/deliverables related to the position

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree required in ecology, biology, natural resource management, environmental science, or related fields.
  • Experience with surface water hydrology concepts and fieldwork, including water quality monitoring and surface flows
  • Experience with environmental fieldwork including in inclement conditions and following safety protocols
  • Experience with detailed data management using Excel and Access

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Enjoying work outside and doesn’t mind working in inclement weather conditions
  • Ability to swim
  • Comfortable on water in kayaks, paddleboards, and other watercraft
  • Must be in willing to potentially traverse over rough terrain to remote field sites
  • Must be detailed-oriented and able to manage multiple responsibilities
  • Communication and capacity-building at different levels.
  • Good negotiator and problem solver, with experience in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Strong oral, written, and graphic communication skills.
  • Ability to collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate a complex set of inputs and present the findings and conclusions clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, team-based environment.
  • Ability to prioritize time efficiently, work independently and manage competing priorities.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office, cloud-based data access and share software such as Google Drive, and other software such as Adobe, etc required.
  • Provide their own personal computer and transportation.

COMPENSATION

Commensurate with experience.

LANGUAGE REQUIRED:

Fully bilingual in English and Spanish.
