Estuario’s Environmental Educator

ESTUARIO’S ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATOR

The San Juan Bay Estuary Program (Estuario) is seeking an Environmental Educator to support the Education component of the San Juan Bay Estuary Program.   The Environmental Educator will be highly collaborative as well as being organized, self-directed, and focused. The Educator is outgoing, energetic, dedicated to Estuario’s mission.  Its primary role is to bring support to the Education Manager and Estuario’s programmatic initiatives related to the Water Quality Monitoring and Corrective Program, Green Infrastructure Master Plan and Estuario’s Watershed-based Mitigation Plan. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Support the 5-Year Monitoring and Corrective Program through an educational program aimed at training and empowering local-based community groups. 
  • Support the development of the Green Infrastructure Master Plan and Immediate Reforestation by providing educational workshops related to management of green areas, water quality monitoring, bird census, microplastics.  
  • Incorporate residents and users into the planning and decision making processes of the types of green infrastructure to be employed in this site
  • Support the engagement process involve in the development of the Watershed Based Mitigation Plan to collectively identify threats, hazards, and vulnerabilities of their regions.
  • Support the Education Manager in the coordination, implementation and evaluation of educational activities and citizen scientists.  Activities include workshops, talks, interpretive tours, research activities, bird census, and community meetings.
  • Coordinate, perform and evaluate projects of community resilience and sustainability. 
  • Maintain up-to-date data entry of participatory bird censuses and other modules of estuarine citizen science certification using the Estuary Atlas and other citizen science platforms such as eBird. 
  • Coordinate and evaluate resilience, education, and research programs related to the “Guardianes del Estuario” school program, Schools Estuarine Field Trips Program and other projects with community groups.
  • Review, edit and update documents and presentations of the estuarine education program. 
  • Provide education to the general public and area schools. 
  • Create educational display materials for events, workshops and storefront windows. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Geography or Environmental Sciences, from an accredited university. 
  • Experience coordinating community-based educational projects and conducting workshops and interpretive tours for various learning communities. 
  • Prefered experience working with some of the Estuary Program monitoring and volunteers projects: Such as Water Quality, Bird Census, Microplastics, Research or Education/Interpretation Internships.
  • Hold CIG Certification “Certified Interpretive Guide” of the National Association for Interpretation (NAI), preferred.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficient in excel, word, power point, and social networks, as well as Canvas and Google Forms. 
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; in both languages, English and Spanish.
  • Strong understanding of environmental issues and of PR biodiveristy, estuarine ecosystems and bird identification.
  • Must be a motivated self-starter and team player 
  • Must have project management skills including multi-tasking abilities 
  • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills 
  • Flexibility to meet changing project priorities and demands 
  • Own transportation and computer. 
  • Available to work on weekends and evenings.

Compensation: Commensurate with Experience

THE SAN JUAN BAY ESTUARY PROGRAM 

The San Juan Bay Estuary Program (SJBEP) is part of the National Estuary Program (NEP), created under Section 320 of the Clean Water Act (CWA), and managed nationally by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). Its mission is to improve the water quality of the San Juan Bay Estuary. Per Section 320 of the CWA, each of the 28 entities affiliated to the NEP must submit to EPA Administrator a Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) to guide the restoration efforts of the most important coastal ecosystems for the economy of the Nation. The main responsibility of each organization under the NEP is to coordinate and measure the implementation of the plan in partnership with the community, state, local, and federal governments and the Academia.
