Estuario Weekly Update
We’re eight days away from the largest participatory science event on the Island! The Puerto Rico Water Quality Monitoring Day 2022 will be on Saturday, August 27, from 9AM-11AM. Have you already signed up? Tomorrow, Saturday, August 20, we’ll be distributing the monitoring kits from spots points across the island. Check your email! Through our weekly update, we share opportunities for collaboration, volunteering, and work; through initiatives and actions programmed for the benefit of the ecosystems and communities of the San Juan Bay estuary. These activities, tips and information are for everyone’s benefit.
Water Quality Monitoring Day
The next training workshop for the Puerto Rico Water Quality Monitoring Day 2022 will be tomorrow, Saturday, August 20, from 9AM-11AM, at the Rio Piedras Botanical Garden and virtually through Zoom. Register in our portal to participate.
Amigos de la Laguna
At the next Amigos de la Laguna meeting, to be held on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at 5PM, we will be reviewing and approving the collaborative agreement of Laguna del Condado Natural Estuarine Reserve between Estuario, the Municipality of San Juan and the DNER. The meeting will be held in a hybrid way (in-person and virtual) at the Jaime Benítez Park and via Zoom. In the portal, you will also find the minutes for the meeting held on August 17, and a preliminary draft of the agreement, in which you can submit comments and suggestions. We invite all neighbors, users, dealers, businesses, and administrators to participate. See you there!
Certificación de Ciudadanos Científicos
Estuario’s current round of elective workshops for the certification for citizen scientists continues: do not miss the workshops corresponding to the Water Quality and Participatory Bird Censuses thematic modules. The next workshop is Application of indicators to determine pollution and water quality; with EPA Region 2 ORISE Fellow Ivelisse Capiel, on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, 7-8PM via Zoom.

Estuario Hazard Mitigation Specialist—We’re seeking a service provider with a proven and successful track record in the development of FEMA approved Hazard Mitigation Plans in a multijurisdictional context to advise in the development of the Multijurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan for the San Juan Metropolitan region in Puerto Rico.

Weekly Water Quality Monitoring
Evaluation conducted Thursday, August 18, 2022. We have red flag for Condado Lagoon Natural Estuarine Reserve, and several areas across the coast. These areas did not meet the quality standard—we recommend avoiding contact with these areas and being on the lookout for precipitation events.
