Estuary Update

Through our weekly update, we share opportunities for collaboration, volunteering, and employment; through initiatives and planned actions that benefit the ecosystems and communities of the San Juan Bay estuary. These activities, tips, and information are for the benefit of everyone.

Citizens get certified in coastal resilience module

On Saturday, October 15, 2022, a group of estuarine citizen scientists completed workshops on tropical coastal ecosystems and sand dune restoration, installed wooden stakes for sand retention, and planted coastal vegetation for sand stabilization. They also conducted microplastic identification and water quality monitoring activities. This event was held in collaboration with Marine Life of the UPR Aguadilla. Participants received their certification as citizen scientists in the coastal resilience module. See the photo gallery here.

Estuary Summit 2022

Save the date! On November 15, 16 and 17, Join us at the Estuary Summit 2022; promoting the development of model programs for conservation, research, water quality monitoring and education, based on the system and communities of the San Juan Bay estuary.

Weekly bacteriological monitoring

Evaluation performed Thursday, October 20, 2022. We have green flag in the County Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve. Although some stations in County Lagoon did not meet the standard, their bacteriological counts were not very high. The beach in front of Nairn Street was the only one on the shoreline that did not meet the water quality standard for this parameter. Finally, we recommend avoiding direct contact with the areas that did not meet the standards and being alert to precipitation events.
