The San Juan Bay Estuary, hereinafter referred to as the Estuary, is committed to upholding the principles of equal opportunity and nondiscrimination in all aspects of its operations. We are dedicated to ensuring that all citizens of the San Juan Bay Estuary watershed, regardless of their background or identity, have access to our programs, services, and information.
Rights under Title VI of the United States Civil Rights Act
Title VI of the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits programs or activities receiving federal government funding from discriminating against individuals. Specifically, Section 601 of Title VI states that no person in the United States shall be discriminated against or excluded from participating in programs or activities receiving federal funds on the basis of race, color, or national origin.
Building on this statute, the U.S. federal government has created new laws that extend protection against discrimination to other groups. These include the Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits discrimination based on a person's sex; the section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which protects people with disabilities from discrimination when they seek services from employers and organizations that receive federal financial assistance; and the Age Discrimination Act of 1975, which prohibits age discrimination in services or programs that receive federal money, among other.
In accordance with federal anti-discrimination laws, the Estuary notifies all stakeholders of our commitment to preventing discrimination based on race, skin color, national origin, sex, disability, or age.
