The San Juan Bay Estuary system is highly diverse. Many of the actions in our Comprehensive Management Plan are aimed at improving and maintaining this diversity of flora and fauna, while also promoting the recreational use of its resources.
Green infrastructure is the system of natural or green spaces and bodies of water that support diverse species of flora and fauna; ensure the functioning of ecological processes; maintain water, air, and soil resources; and contribute to the health and quality of life of individuals and communities.” (Juncos Gautier, 2007, p. 10)
The objective of the Water Quality Project is to understand the condition of the water quality of the EBSJ and to measure the progress in its restoration.
Citizen participation is an essential part of the San Juan Bay Estuary and our initiatives to monitor estuarine water quality. The volunteer time provided by committed citizen scientists strengthens our efforts to preserve the quality of our natural resources. Thanks to them, we generate key information about the water condition of the most important ecosystem for Puerto Rico's economy: the San Juan Bay Estuary.
Marine debris: Any persistent solid material manufactured or processed and deposited or abandoned directly or indirectly, deliberately or unintentionally in the marine or Great Lakes environment (NOAA).
Aquatic trash: trash that pollutes U.S. rivers, lakes, streams, and creeks (EPA).
Our estuarine education project provides meaningful experiences with the goal of creating appreciation for the natural and social ecosystems found in the San Juan Bay Estuary watershed.
