El Pilot Project for Green Infrastructure in the Estuarine Nature Reserve of the County Lagoon It is a green area restoration and maintenance implementation that we seek to replicate in other regions of the San Juan Bay estuary watershed. As part of the Green Infrastructure Master Plan In the Estuary, this Project consists of planting various native species in different areas of the Reserve. These include red mangrove. (Rhizophora mangle), almond (Terminalia catappa), eugenia (Eugenia borinquensis), emajagüilla (Thespesia populnea) and sea grapes (Coccoloba uvifera).
We share the following video, where you will learn about the importance of green infrastructure efforts throughout the basin.
The presence of these species in the Reserve provides ecosystems for nesting, feeding, and coexistence with other species. It also contributes to reducing erosion and soil compaction, supporting coastal resilience. Similarly, it allows for the filtration of runoff, protecting the area from flooding.
The plantings also aim to recover foliage lost due to recent atmospheric events in the region.
