Weekly Estuary Update
Greetings from the estuary. Below, we share the events, initiatives, and opportunities planned to benefit the waters, ecosystems, and communities of the San Juan Bay Estuary.
3E: Examine + Explore + Expand with the UPRRP
The San Juan Bay Estuary, in collaboration with the University of Puerto Rico and with the support of the NSF, will provide mentorship and training to a group of environmental science students from the Río Piedras Campus.
El 3E Program: Examine + Explore + Expand, It began in July 2022 and will end this summer of 2024, providing experiences in different ecosystems and communities of the San Juan Bay Estuary.
On Monday, June 10, the students of Program 3E They visited the Estuary Resilient Center, La Goyco Community Workshop (TCG), accompanied by the education and citizen science manager, Sahid Rosado. In addition to a tour with Iliana García, coordinator of the TCG reading room, the students had the opportunity to learn about the beginnings of this community effort, its residents, and the spaces that make this Resilient Center stand out.
On the other hand, Stacy Larancuent, public policy advisor, and Cristina Ramirez, manager of the Estuary's aquatic waste area, presented the campaign's efforts. It should not touch the floor or reach the water, in the communities and commercial sector of Loíza Street.
They explained the various ways to get involved in the campaign, including participating in material diversion stations during community events, such as the Tito Matos Fest. They also highlighted the support of local businesses for the campaign and the recognition they have received for implementing measures to reduce and responsibly manage solid waste.
Environmental Fair of the Municipality of Trujillo Alto
The Estuary will be present in the Environmental Fair of the Municipality of Trujillo Alto, which will be held on Saturday, June 15th, From 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Bicentennial Promenade. As part of the fair, we will have the following educational workshop: Learn about vegetable oil and its implications for infrastructure and the environment; From 12:00 pm to 12:45 pm, the workshop will be facilitated by young people participating in an education and awareness internship focused on integrated resource and waste management with the San Juan Bay Estuary. We look forward to seeing you at our information table!
Tito Matos Fest
This weekend we will also have the Tito Matos Fest at Taller Comunidad La Goyco, From Thursday, June 13th to Sunday, June 16th. See the festival itinerary, here.
As part of the campaign It should not touch the floor or reach the water. The Estuary will be providing support at the festival's material diversion stations. If you'd like to be part of this effort, you can sign up as a volunteer. here.
Sowing in Pine Nuts
Last Saturday, June 8th, we carried out a coastal vegetation planting in Piñones, as part of the Coastal Resilience module of the Estuary Citizen Scientist Certification. We appreciate the participation of volunteers from L'Oréal Caribbean. Congratulations!

Weekly bacteriological monitoring
Assessment conducted on Thursday, June 13, 2024. We have a GREEN flag for County Lagoon. Two stations in the coastal region exceeded the water quality standard for enterococci, "Beach Action Value," of 70 CFU/100 ML; we recommend avoiding these areas. Have a good weekend.
