Weekly water quality monitoring

We present the results of the weekly water quality monitoring, made the Wednesday, March 31, 2021. These are published every Friday for our Facebook page.

Lecture Series: San Juan Past and Present: Stories about nature, science and resilience

The Estuary and the National Park Service (NPS) are offering collaborative talks and inviting the public to participate in this new series of talks during Earth Month. 

These talks will serve as contact hours for recertification as guide interpreters (CIG) for NAI-certified guide interpreters. 

The talks will be held via Zoom. The following topics will be covered: 

Wednesday, April 7, 2021, 3-4 PM – Biodiversity in San Juan Bay: a historical-natural overview

Wednesday, April 14, 2021, 3-4 PM –  Water quality at San Cristóbal Castle: use and management of the resource 

Wednesday, April 21, 2021, 3-4 PM – Scientific innovations in the fortifications of Old San Juan during the 18th century

Wednesday, April 28, 2021, 3-4 PM – Old San Juan amidst poverty, attacks, hurricanes, and pandemics

Forum and presentation of the book Estuarine Voices

The Estuary presented the book Estuarine Voices: Life Stories in the Communities that Make Up the San Juan Bay Estuary last Tuesday, March 30, 2021, from 6:30-8:30 PM via Facebook Live

The forum featured historians Javier E. Laureano and Ruth M. García Pantaleón, and collaborators Sonya Canetti, director of the Projects Office of the Puerto Rican Foundation for the Humanities, and José Santiago Reillo, community leader from the Cantera Peninsula. It was moderated by Brenda Torres Barreto, executive director of the Estuary.

Listen to the new podcast - Voices of the Estuary: Oral Histories

Voices of the Estuary This project explores, through oral history, the experiences and stories of residents in the communities that make up the San Juan Bay estuary watershed. This exercise recovers the urban memory of the transformation of the Greater Puerto Rico area and its natural heritage. This initiative of the San Juan Bay Estuary Program is made possible by a grant from the Puerto Rican Foundation for the Humanities.

Earn your Public Health Merit Badge 

Attention Scouts – Estuary and the Guaitiao District of the Boy Scouts of America in Puerto Rico, in collaboration with the Graduate School of Public Health of the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Rico, offer you workshops to obtain the Public Health Merit Badge. These workshops will be offered on Saturdays, April 10 and 17, 2021, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, through the ZOOM platform.
