Estuary Update! 

Greetings to our entire estuary community. We send you our warmest regards and hope you are all well upon receiving this email. We are sharing these initiatives and actions carried out week after week. These activities, tips, and information are for the benefit of everyone. Once again, we thank everyone who tuned in to our activities this Earth Month.

Identify assets in your community for the development of Puerto Rico's first Multijurisdictional Risk Mitigation Plan

Estuary continues to recruit collaborators from the areas coastal, urban and rural of the towns of Bayamón, Canóvanas, Carolina, Cataño, Guaynabo, Loíza, San Juan, Toa Baja and Trujillo Alto; for the identification of assets that contribute to the strengthening of communities through the Risk Mitigation Plan of the San Juan Bay Estuary watershed. 

The workshops scheduled for next week are: 

  • Trujillo Alto urban area: Monday, May 3, 2021, at 5:30 PM
  • Urban Cataño: Tuesday, May 4, 2021, at 5:30 PM
  • Coastal San Juan: Wednesday, May 5, 2021, at 5:30 PM
  • Canóvanas urban: Thursday, May 6, 2021, at 5:30 PM
  • Rural Guaynabo: Friday, May 7, 2021 at 5:30 PM

Asset Identification Workshops


Participate in the new round of Citizen Scientist Certification workshops

Get certified as a citizen scientist! This May 2021 marks the start of a new round of elective workshops, including modules on Participatory bird censuses, Water quality y Characterization and reduction of microplastics. 

Next Wednesday, May 5, 2021, from 3-4 PM Don't miss the workshop on Bird Censuses: Introduction to eBird by Coral Avilés Santiago and Eliezer Nieves Rodríguez.

Participate in Global Big Day 2021

This next 8 May 2021 SaturdayJoin us in counting and recording birds from your home or a nearby forest, through the app eBird. Last year, Global Big Day brought together more birdwatchers virtually than ever before: more than 50,000 people in 175 countries They submitted an astounding 120,000 checklists to eBird, setting a world record for a single day of birdwatching. Let's beat that record!

Remember, on Wednesday May 5th We will be offering a virtual workshop on how to use the eBird app, so you'll be ready for Saturday the 8th. (registration link) Participating is easy; you can even be part of Global Bird Day from home. You can spend 5 or 10 minutes entering your observations into eBird. We're sharing the new episode of Voices of the Estuary. The preservationist leader Hilda Benítez He describes the Ocean Park where he grew up, stories of his family in the area, and the important work he does through the organization 7 Quillas to protect the nests of leatherback sea turtles, an endangered species.

Lecture Series: San Juan Past and Present: Stories about nature, science and resilience 

The series of talks was successfully completed: San Juan Past and Present: Stories about nature, science and resilience in collaboration with National Park Service (NPS) during Earth Month.

Call for applications: Coordinator of the 2021 Water Quality Monitoring Day

We are seeking a Coordinator to organize the largest Citizen Science event in Puerto Rico. The coordinator will be responsible for enthusiastically engaging all sectors of the DMCA and increasing participation, taking into account data from previous years. Their primary goal should be access to clean and safe water for all in Puerto Rico.
