Estuario Weekly Update

Greetings! Through our weekly update, we inform about events, projects, activities and training opportunities to residents and friends of the communities of the San Juan Bay Estuary.

Certification for citizen scientists

Here are the scheduled workshops and field trips. See more information and register on https://estuario.org/ccc/.

Coastal Resilience module:

  • August 26 – Field trip: planting of coastal vegetation – from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in Manglar de Jobos, Isabela
  • August 30 – Introductory Workshop: Coastal Resilience – 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. via Zoom.
  • September 2 – Field trip: planting of coastal vegetation – from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the mangrove swamp near the Arecibo Yacht Club
  • September 5 – Ecological assessment of coral communities – from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. by Zoom.
  • September 7 – Field trip: ecological evaluation of coral communities – from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. in the Balneario del Escambrón, San Juan
  • September 9 – Field trip: planting of coastal vegetation – from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in Laguna del Condado

We continue to certify high school students through the Coastal Resilience module. Here is the next scheduled field trip for high school students:

  • September 9 – Field trip: monitoring coral communities [for high school students] – 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

The certification for citizen scientists counts toward green contact or community service hours for public and private high school students. For more information, contact our education team at [email protected]. Students must be enrolled by an adult. Register at: https://estuario.org/ccc/.

Estuario Resident Artists

Don’t miss the opening event of the installation: The sounds of the estuary; with resident artist Armando Román, tomorrow, Saturday, August 26, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Taller Comunidad La Goyco.

The installation will remain on the second floor of Taller Comunidad La Goyco until Saturday, September 2, 2023, and will be open from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on operational days.

National Estuarines Week

Save the date! From September 17 to 23, 2023, we will be celebrating the National Estuaries Week.

Stay tuned for details of the activities we’ll celebrate with; among them several educational workshops, a family day, a screening of Cine del Estuario and a Bio Blitz in the Condado Lagoon Natural Estuarine Reserve.

Tree planting in Capetillo

Thank you! To all the volunteers who participated in the planting activity at Huerto, Vivero y Bosque Urbano Comunitario de Capetillo. With your support we planted more than 20 trees!

Weekly water quality monitoring

Evaluation carried out Thursday, August 24, 2023. We have a GREEN flag for the Condado Lagoon Natural estuarine Reserve. We recommend avoiding the areas that exceeded the Beach Action Value water quality standard (70 CFU/100 ML). Remember to avoid water during rain events. Have a good weekend!
