Estuary invites to forum on interagency efforts for clean water

The communities will hear from agency representatives about their progress.
October 15, 2020 – San Juan, Puerto Rico – The non-profit organization, the San Juan Bay Estuary Program (Estuary), invites communities in the municipality of San Juan to a forum focused on discussing the interagency processes underway to comply with the federal Clean Water Act. These efforts include fulfilling agreements between the federal government and the responsible parties. The event will take place this coming Tuesday, October 20, at 6:00 pm via the San Juan Estuary Facebook page.

“The Estuary has the support of the entities responsible for the operation and maintenance of the water infrastructure to move forward with the restoration of the San Juan Bay Estuary system. This infrastructure is very complex, especially in a highly urbanized area like the San Juan metropolitan region. This forum will provide information on the actions being taken by the various entities in charge. By making this information available to the public, the Estuary offers tools for the community to learn about and participate in the efforts to achieve a healthy environment for all,” stated Brenda Torres Barreto, Executive Director of the Estuary.

In 2015, the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority, the Puerto Rico Highways and Transportation Authority, and the Municipality of San Juan signed consent agreements with the U.S. Department of Justice to comply with the federal Clean Water Act in the San Juan metropolitan area. Since then, a compliance plan has been implemented, along with the corresponding stormwater management permits.
