San Juan, Puerto Rico As part of the #EstuaryRevive campaign, the Estuary Program today launched its community support initiative, Friends of the Lagoon. The announcement was made with the planting of various tree species along the shoreline of Condado Lagoon. Friends of the Lagoon is comprised of a diverse group of representatives dedicated to the revitalization of this area. Representatives include residents, recreational operators, the hotel industry, and visitors.

Former Miss Universe Denise Quiñones, who served as the godmother of San Juan Moda, joined the event in support of the San Juan Bay Estuary reforestation initiative. “The support of exemplary figures for our ecosystem revitalization efforts in the metropolitan area is key to reaching diverse audiences. Amigos de la Laguna (Friends of the Lagoon) appreciates Denise Quiñones' commitment to her homeland and welcomes everyone who sees the Lagoon as a place for leisure and recreation,” said Brenda Torres, executive director of the San Juan Bay Estuary.

This effort was supported by companies such as EDP University, MCS, and Walmart, which provided contributions for the purchase of trees and planting equipment.

“The San Juan Bay Estuary system—with its mangroves, marshes, and channels—was the first line of defense in the metropolitan area against Hurricane Maria. This has negatively impacted this ecosystem, and it is up to us to rebuild it. We are very pleased that celebrities like Denise Quiñones and companies like Walmart, EDP University, and MCS are joining this effort, along with our volunteer corps, to revive the Estuary. This task of reforesting and restoring the health of our coasts is our responsibility,” stated the Executive Director. “As part of the Friends of the Lagoon effort, we are seeking the restoration of the Condado Lagoon, which is crucial for the economic development and natural resources of this area,” she added.
