Cristina Ramírez Colón Aquatic Waste Project Manager

Cristina I. Ramírez Colón graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor's degree in Geography from the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Puerto Rico. In 2014, she earned her Master's degree in Waste Management from the Autonomous University of Madrid. From 2013 to 2015, she led two projects focused on the proper management of solid waste, aimed at conserving waterways, as part of the San Juan Bay Estuary Program. She collaborated on the publication of the "Citizen's Guide to Conserving the Condado Lagoon, 2014." In 2015, she was selected to receive one of ten mini-grants to develop replicable environmental education projects in Puerto Rico (GREEN-PR) from the Center for Sustainable Community Solutions (CSCS) at Syracuse University in New York.

She worked for two and a half years in the Environmental Planning and Compliance Office of the Autonomous Municipality of San Juan as an Environmental Educator. She holds the Recycling Promoter Certification from the Solid Waste Authority. She participated in the First Workshop on Microplastic Assessment in Fisheries Resources of the Permanent Commission for the South Pacific at the Catholic University of the North, Chile.

A few years ago, Cristina worked at the Estuary and incorporated the Trash-Free Water project in Condado Lagoon into the Program, achieving significant results. She then accepted the challenge of working as Environmental Education Coordinator for the Municipality of San Juan, where she led workshops and seminars on reduction, reuse, and recycling. These workshops were aimed at communities, public and private entities, and schools in San Juan. It is worth noting that best practices in waste management were implemented in these workshops. Cristina has served as the Partnerships and Community Outreach Coordinator for the San Juan Bay Estuary Program. Now, Cristina is rejoining our team as an aquatic waste project manager.
