Education Specialist: Curriculum Design and Educational Guides

The San Juan Bay Estuary Program (Estuary) is in the process of creating and designing an additional module for its Citizen Scientist Certification on the topic of microplastics and an educational guide on reforestation, resilience, and soil health. Therefore, for this endeavor, the Estuary needs to recruit a specialist with extensive experience and knowledge in developing educational guides, curricula, and instructional modules.

Responsibilities:

  1. Compilation of information from the scientific area of ​​the Estuary regarding the Microplastics module and activities.
  1. Compilation of information from the area of ​​resilience in educational topics related to the management of nurseries and orchards.
  1. Development and design of an educational module (Microplastics) for the Citizen Scientist Certification Program following the model of the Water Quality and Bird Censuses modules.
  1. Development and design of an Educational Guide containing activities and projects for nurseries and gardens for different school levels and the community at large. The educational topics must be aligned with the Department of Education's standards in the areas of science and social studies.
  1. Work on the development of these two products in collaboration with the Estuary Staff for an analysis of the topics to be included in the guide and the module.
  1. Evaluation and correction of the two educational modules of the Estuary of the Citizen Scientist Certification of Environmental Monitoring of the Estuary (Water Quality Monitoring and Participatory Bird Censuses).

Components of the Educational Guide for the Management of Nurseries and Orchards:

The Curriculum Guide will contain, but is not limited to, the following parts:

a. Background of the Estuary (Mission, Vision, Programs and Projects)

b. Thematic Introduction to the Guide (Estuary Message)

c. Pedagogical Approach or Methodology (Description/recommendation of one or more strategies)

d. Description of Research Strategies, Activities and Techniques (Topics, Description, General Objectives, Specific Objectives, Requirements, Contact Hours, Tasks, Field Activities, Evaluation)

e. References (Analysis and comments)

The Microplastics Module will follow the model of the two previous modules and will contain the information already collected by the Estuary.

Candidates to be considered will have the following qualifications:

  • Academic background from a recognized university in Education, Research, Evaluation, Sociology, Geography, Environmental Sciences or Leadership in Education.
  • Preferably a master's or doctoral degree in the areas described.
  • Preferably experience in environmental education projects.
  • Experience in the design of Educational Guides, Curriculum Guides and educational and research activities
  • Having transportation available to participate in meetings at the Estuary Center in Old San Juan, in nursery areas and other points in the San Juan Bay Estuary watershed.
  • Updated CV with references.
