Greetings from the estuary! Through our weekly update, we inform residents and friends of the communities in the San Juan Bay estuary watershed about events, projects, activities, and training opportunities.

Plastic-free July

Learn about Law 51-2022

The Estuary invites you to participate in an informative virtual workshop, where we will inform you about the Law 51-2022, Law for the prohibition of single-use plastics; the next Saturday, July 22, 2023, from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm via Zoom. While everyone is welcome, this workshop is of particular interest to business owners. Register now. here.

Certification of scientific citizens

Water quality module:

  • July 13th – Field trip: bacteriological monitoring in the County Lagoon and coastal area; from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm

Coastal resilience module:

  • July 20th – Field trip: ecological assessment of the coral reef; from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm, at the Isla Verde Reserve, Carolina
  • July 22th – Field trip: ecological assessment of the coral reef; from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm, at Balneario del Escambrón, San Juan
  • July 22th – Field trip: planting coastal vegetation and beach cleanup; from 8:00 am to 11:00 am, at Crashboat Beach, Aguadilla

The Estuary certifies students in grades 9No. to 12mo as part of the coastal resilience module. Through certification, you can complete your Green Contact hours or community service (at a public or private school). If you are a high school student, you can participate in one of the following events:

  • July 15th – Field trip: mangrove monitoring [for high school students]; from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm at County Lagoon
  • July 20th – Thematic workshop: mangrove propagation and maintenance; from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm via Zoom
  • July 26th – Thematic workshop: Introduction to coastal resilience; from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm via Zoom

Summer workshop for educators

The San Juan Bay Estuary and the BirdsCaribbean Warbler Working Group invite you to the following workshop for educators: The chiriría and the conservation of wetlands, el Thursday, July 13, 2023, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Cantera Peninsula Community Center.

In addition to the theoretical part, where activities from the teacher's manual will be discussed: The wonderful wetlands of the insular Caribbean, The workshop will include a field trip. The field trip will be a kayak tour, which is a requirement, and will be offered in two sessions (Saturday, July 15 or Sunday, July 16). The meeting place will be shared with registered participants.

Professional training events for environmental interpreters

Workshop for interpreters

The Estuary invites all environmental interpreters to the workshop: From the sidewalk: activities, techniques and technologies to enrich our interpretive nature tours; el Tuesday, July 18, from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm via Zoom.

We will discuss the principles of environmental interpretation, covering activities and techniques that can help create memorable experiences on interpretive tours, within the context of the different ecosystems of the Estuary. This workshop counts as contact hours for NAI CIG recertification.

Interpreter's tour

The San Juan Bay Estuary invites certified interpreters, nature guides, and community guides to participate in a kayak tour, where ecological concepts of estuarine biodiversity and ecosystems will be discussed, along with interpretation techniques to include in guided tours.

The tour Water and biodiversity: interpreting the estuarine ecosystems that connect us, It will be held Thursday, July 20, from 8:00 am to 10:00 am in the Jaime Benítez Park of the Estuarine Nature Reserve of the Condado Lagoon. This tour counts as contact hours for NAI CIG recertification.

The sounds of the estuary

Join Estuary's resident artist, Armando Román, in the creation of The sounds of the estuary, A sound recording and documentation project. The creative process for this project will consist of three journeys, during which the everyday sounds of various towns located within the estuary and its watershed will be recorded. These recordings, and the experiences captured in them, will form the basis of a sound map that will be part of the Estuary Atlas. The tours will take place on July 14, 23 and 27.

Mangroves are being planted in the County Lagoon

Last Saturday, July 1st, high school students planted mangroves in the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve as part of the coastal resilience module of the Estuary's Citizen Scientist Certification program. Congratulations!

Weekly bacteriological monitoring

Assessment conducted on Thursday, July 6, 2023. We have a GREEN flag for the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve. We recommend avoiding the area that exceeded the water quality parameter for enterococci (70 CFU/100mL). Remember to avoid the water during rain events.
