Estuary Update

Greetings from the estuary! Below are the opportunities for collaboration, volunteering, and training this week, scheduled to benefit the ecosystems of the San Juan Bay Estuary and its communities. 

Certification of scientific citizens

The following are the scheduled events:

Coastal resilience module:

  • August 1th, XNUMX – Elective workshop – Ecological assessment of the coral reef; from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm via Zoom
  • August 2th, XNUMX – Elective workshop – Ecological restoration of mangroves; from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm via Zoom
  • August 8th, XNUMX – Elective workshop – Ecological assessment of fish and aquatic communities; from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm via Zoom
  • August 15th, XNUMX – Elective workshop – Ecological assessment of seagrasses; from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm via Zoom
  • August 30th, XNUMX – Introductory workshop: coastal resilience; from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm via Zoom

Participatory bird census module:

  • August 9th, XNUMX – Elective workshop – Bird censuses, an introduction to eBird; from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm via Zoom

Water quality module:

  • August 16th, XNUMX – Elective workshop – Water quality: monitoring and relevance; from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm via Zoom

Microplastics characterization and reduction module:

  • August 23th, XNUMX – Elective workshop – From plastics to microplastics—public policy and its impacts; from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm via Zoom

If you are a high school student, We have the following field trips scheduled (remember that you can also participate in the coastal resilience module workshops):

  • August 5th, XNUMX – Field trip – mangrove monitoring [for high school students]; from 8:00 am to 11:00 am
  • August 6th, XNUMX – Field trip – Coral community monitoring [for high school students]; from 8:00 am to 11:00 am
  • August 12th, XNUMX – Field trip – Ecological assessment of fish and aquatic communities [for high school students]; from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
  • August 19th, XNUMX – Field trip – Monitoring of seagrass communities [for high school students]; from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
  • August 26th, XNUMX – Field trip – Monitoring of coral grass communities [for high school students]; from 8:00 am to 11:00 am

The locations of these field trips will be shared with registered participants. To begin the registration process, please send an email to education[email protected]This must be done by a parent or guardian.

Family day out at the County Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve

Estuary invites you to the next family day out at the County Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve, on Saturday, August 5, 2023, starting at 8:00 am at Jaime Benítez Park. 

We will have the following activities:

[8:00 am] – Red mangrove monitoring 

[2:00 pm] – Ethnobotany workshop for tour guides [registration required] 

[3:30 pm] – Basic classes and exhibition of Olympic wrestling 

[5:00 pm] – Inauguration of the Mural with Awareness 

[6:45 pm] – Prelude to Estuary Cinema 

[7:00 pm] – Estuary Cinema presents Top Gun: Maverick

Estuary Cinema

On Saturday, August 5, 2023, Cine del Estuario presents Top Gun: Mavericks; At 7:00 pm in Jaime Benítez Park at the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve. As always, this performance is free. Bring your blanket or chair!

Plastic-free July

We're celebrating a plastic-free July! The Estuary's responsible solid waste management initiatives, It should not touch the floor or reach the water y Leave a clean footprint in Piñones, They advise you on actions you can take to reduce your plastic use. This week: Use biodegradable or compostable containers!

Resident artists of the Estuary

We've finished the sound recording tours! A big thank you to everyone who contributed to the project. The sounds of the estuary, From resident artist Armando Román. Stay tuned to our weekly updates and social media, where we'll be posting the products from these trips.

Stop by Jaime Benítez Park! Resident artist Angélica Rivera has finished her project. Mural with a conscience. This was made possible thanks to the participation of members of the public in their flora and fauna illustration workshops at the lagoon. The mural will be unveiled on Saturday, July 5, during the family day out at the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Reserve. Don't miss it!

EPA visit to County Lagoon

The EPA's National Environmental Justice Advisory Council, which met this week in Puerto Rico, received an invitation from the Estuary to tour the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve.

Between crossing avenues and heavy rain, the group of about 50 participants arrived at the reserve guided by Brenda Torres Barreto, executive director of the Estuary and Coral Avilés, education coordinator.

There, Mario García, the reserve's activities coordinator for the Estuary, welcomed and guided the group. Congratulations!

Weekly bacteriological monitoring

Assessment conducted on Wednesday, July 26, 2023. Although the average bacteriological analysis was below the Beach Action Value standard of 70 CFU/100 ML, we are announcing a RED flag at the County Lagoon Estuarine Reserve and recommending avoiding the water due to recent rainfall.
