Estuary Update
Through our weekly update, we share opportunities for collaboration, volunteering, and employment; through initiatives and planned actions that benefit the ecosystems and communities of the San Juan Bay estuary. These activities, tips, and information are for the benefit of everyone.

Puerto Rico's 2022 Water Quality Monitoring Day was a success.
Saturday, August 27, 2022 — More than 1,800 participants conducted, documented, and reported water quality monitoring at over 200 points around the entire island.
We are immensely grateful to the event sponsors: Ford of Puerto Rico and MAPFRE Puerto Rico.
To the collaborators in the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources of Puerto Rico, Sea Grant Puerto Rico, Las Salinas de Cabo Rojo Interpretive Center, Para La Naturaleza, School of Medicine at Ponce Health Sciences University, SurfRider Foundation in Rincón and the Agricultural Extension Service of the College of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus; who donated their time, space and resources for the performance of training workshops throughout Puerto Rico.

International Coastal Cleanup at County Lagoon
We'll be kicking off Estuary Week by supporting the Scuba Dogs Society in the 2022 International Coastal Cleanup, from the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Reserve, from 8 AM to 12 PM. Join us! Register today at https://estuario.org/eventos/.
Special screening at Estuary Cinema
As a special event celebrating Estuaries Week, we will be presenting the Puerto Rican production, " Serán las dueñas de la tierra" (They Will Be the Owners of the Land), on Sunday, September 18, from 7 PM to 9 PM at Jaime Benítez Park in the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve. As always, this event is free of charge. Don't miss this opportunity to see this great local production. We hope to see you there!
Citizen Scientist Certification: Get certified in one day—Coastal Resilience Module
Get certified as a citizen scientist in one day. Estuary invites you to the event, Coastal Ecosystems: Ecological Restoration for Sand Dunes; on Saturday, September 17, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the Carolina Beach Resort.
The event will include the introductory workshop: Introduction to Tropical Coastal Ecosystems; and the elective workshop: Ecological Restoration in Sand Dunes. In the afternoon, we will conduct field trips: water quality assessment, dune restoration, and planting and monitoring of coastal vegetation in sand dunes. Upon completion of the event, you will have fulfilled all the requirements necessary to obtain your certification.

Weekly bacteriological monitoring
Assessment carried out on Thursday, September 8, 2022. We have a red flag in the County Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve and other areas that did not meet the quality standard, so we recommend avoiding these areas and being alert to precipitation events.
