Through our weekly update, we share opportunities for collaboration, volunteering, and employment; through initiatives and planned actions that benefit the ecosystems and communities of the San Juan Bay estuary. These activities, tips, and information are for the benefit of everyone.
Friends of the Lagoon Meeting
Be part of the management process for the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve (RNELC). Join us for the next Friends of the Lagoon meeting on Wednesday, November 2, 2022, at 5:30 p.m. in Jaime Benítez Park.
We will cover the following topics:
- Status of the RNELC Collaborative Agreement
- Position of “Project Coordinator—Public Engagement”
- Weekly water quality monitoring
- Other matters (Special Paddle Board Event, Estuary Cinema - Friends of Fort San Jerónimo screening, activities throughout the year, new initiatives)

Certification of scientific citizens
A new round of elective workshops for certification in the modules of water quality monitoring, microplastic characterization and reduction, participatory bird censuses and coastal resilience begins.
The workshops will be held virtually, via Zoom, from 6:30 PM to 8 PM on the following dates:
- November 9: Introduction to water quality monitoring
- November 16: Introduction to participatory bird censuses
- November 30: Introduction to microplastics and other aquatic debris
- December 7: Coastal resilience workshop

Volunteers from Banco Popular are certified as citizen scientists
As part of the certification process, these volunteers planted red mangrove trees in the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve. We thank Banco Popular for sponsoring the coastal resilience module of the Citizen Scientist Certification Project. See the photo gallery here.
Leading the way in solid waste management on the Island
October 25, 2022—Estuario and other organizations and entities working on solid waste management, landfills, recycling, and the circular economy throughout Puerto Rico were invited by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the Caribbean and the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA) to a dialogue with EPA Region 2 Administrator Lisa García and DRNA representatives. The dialogue took place at the Puerto Rico Recycling Museum in the Municipality of Hatillo.
We thank the EPA , DRNA , the Recycling Museum and the organizations that are part of the integrated solid waste management efforts in the country and the funds for the Comprehensive Waste Plan at the Island level.
Weekly bacteriological monitoring
Assessment conducted on Thursday, October 27, 2022. We have a RED flag at the County Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve. Pine Grove Beach was the only beach along the shoreline that did not meet the water quality standard this week. Finally, we remind you to avoid direct contact with bodies of water during precipitation events and for at least 48 hours afterward.
