Estuary Update
Below, we share opportunities for collaboration, volunteering, and training this week, through initiatives and actions planned to benefit the ecosystems of the San Juan Bay Estuary and its communities.
World Wetlands Day
On Thursday, February 2, 2023, we celebrate World Wetlands Day ! Take this opportunity to learn about the wetlands of the San Juan Bay Estuary watershed, their impact, and their importance. Don't miss the workshop: The Wetlands of the Estuary Watershed: Understanding Their Geography, Ecosystems, and Biodiversity, at 7:00 pm via Zoom, with Eliezer Nieves, an education and community engagement specialist. On World Wetlands Day, share your support for the restoration of the Earth's wetlands by using the hashtags #GenerationRestoration and #ForWetlands on social media.
Certification of scientific citizens
A new round of elective workshops begins for the Estuary Citizen Scientist Certification Project, covering the modules of Participatory Bird Censuses, Water Quality, Characterization and Reduction of Microplastics, and Coastal Resilience.
The dates for the workshops will be as follows:
- Getting to know the water birds of the Estuary wetlands– Wednesday, February 1, 2023, 7:00 pm
- Water quality in the Estuary: bacteriological analysis– Wednesday, February 8, 2023, 7:00 pm
- Characterization of microplastics in water– Wednesday, February 15, 2023, 7:00 pm
- Ecological assessment of the coral reef – Wednesday, February 22, 2023, 7:00 pm
The workshops will be provided virtually, via Zoom.

Educational day at the County Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve
Don't miss the next educational day at the Laguna del Condado Estuarine Nature Reserve, in Jaime Benítez Park , on Saturday, February 4, 2023 !
There will be information booths, a treasure hunt, an interpretive walk through the reserve, salsa lessons, and Puerto Rican folk music. The Friends of Fort San Jerónimo documentary will also be shown. Then, at 7:00 pm, stay for the Estuary Cinema screening!

Estuary Cinema
On Saturday, February 4, 2023, following the educational day at the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve, Estuary Cinema presents: Jurassic World: Dominion; at 7:00 pm in Jaime Benítez Park. This event is free. Bring your blanket or chair!
Water Quality Day
Have you chosen your body of water yet? The fifteenth Annual Water Quality Day will be on Saturday, April 1, 2023. Save the date! Registration opens soon.
Weekly bacteriological monitoring
Assessment conducted on Thursday, January 26, 2023. We have a GREEN flag at the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve. We always recommend avoiding direct contact with bodies of water during rain events (and at least 48 hours afterward).
The restoration and water quality management efforts in the San Juan Bay estuary watershed are made possible by our supporters. Donations to the Estuary are tax-deductible in Puerto Rico and the United States.
