An Open House will be held so that citizens can learn about the restoration projects in which they can participate.
With the goal of recruiting volunteers, the San Juan Bay Estuary Program will hold an Open House this coming Friday, September 1st, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, so that people can learn about the Program's restoration projects from environmental experts. This was announced today by the San Juan Bay Estuary's Executive Director, Brenda Torres Barreto. The event will take place at the Estuary Center in Old San Juan.
“The Open House is an invitation extended to our citizens, as we recognize their tremendous interest in collaborating, being part of the solution, and gaining new skills in various fields to obtain employment opportunities. Our volunteers not only support us but also receive training and certifications for their time. We currently have 800 volunteers working in areas such as water quality monitoring, reforestation, coastal stabilization in the face of climate change, environmental interpretation in rural communities within the watershed, and environmental education,” stated the Program's Executive Director. “This event will give you the opportunity to learn about the wide variety of new restoration projects in which you can collaborate and motivate citizen action for the care and conservation of these natural resources,” she added.
The exhibit consists of individual presentations by the team of professionals and scientists from the San Juan Bay Estuary. Restoration projects include water quality monitoring, fish hatchery development, a wildlife census, a water quality hackathon, green infrastructure, and educational workshops, among others. Visitors will also learn about the training programs being offered and how these projects are being implemented.
The San Juan Bay Estuary promotes all efforts that advance the restoration agenda for the water bodies of the Puerto Rico metropolitan area. Its efforts range from water quality monitoring at 25 points throughout the watershed to education through schools and community centers. It also provides educational spaces focused on the ecosystems of the San Juan Estuary, such as the underwater walkway at Condado Plaza Beach, the water quality alert system in the Condado Lagoon, and exhibits about the estuary in areas frequented by residents and visitors.
“We invite everyone to visit the Estuary Center in Old San Juan and encourage them to join this effort to support the sustainability of the most important estuarine system for Puerto Rico’s environment and economic development. Conserving our resources is everyone’s responsibility, and we are all responsible for ensuring the sustainability of our island,” the Executive Director concluded.
