Civic participation is essential to the San Juan Bay Estuary Program and our initiatives to monitor water quality. Time invested by volunteer scientists strengthens our efforts to preserve the quality of our natural resources. Thanks to the volunteers, we generate key information about the conditions of the water in the most important ecosystem to the economy of Puerto Rico, the San Juan Bay Estuary.
Solid or liquid waste that flows into the rain sewage system flows directly into the water without receiving treatment. Detergents used to clean garages or mechanic shops are common contaminants. 80% of the waste found in our waters comes from actions taken on dry land. The objective of the Water Quality Program is to learn about the condition of the quality of the water of the EBSJ and measure improvements on its restoration.
Over the years, the San Juan Bay Estuary Project (SBSJ) has established protocols, strategies, initiatives, and collaborations to ensure the sustainability of our efforts. Proper documentation of all processes and outcomes has allowed the SBSJ to evaluate its performance and improve its systems.
The San Juan Bay Estuary conducts weekly monitoring of bacteriological levels at some of the beaches and lagoons along the northeastern coastal area of the island.
The San Juan Bay Estuary Water Quality Monitoring Project has the function of ensuring the quality of the water of the San Juan Bay Estuary through the physical-chemical characterization of its water bodies.
