This map presents the median annual household income within the San Juan Bay Estuary watershed, according to data from the United States Census Bureau.
The average annual household income in this area is $23,164. When we break that data down by municipality, we find that people in the nine municipalities have average incomes of:
- Bayamón ($43,000)
- Guaynabo ($40,000)
- Trujillo Alto ($30,000)
- Carolina ($28,000)
- Toa Baja ($25,000)
- San Juan ($22,000)
- Canóvanas ($19,000)
- Loíza ($18,000)
- Cataño ($8,000)
Geographically, the map shows that the highest average annual incomes are concentrated in the census tracts in the southwest and south of the basin, encompassing the areas of Bayamón, Guaynabo, and southern San Juan. Another area with a high average income extends along the Atlantic coast from Condado, in the municipality of San Juan, to Isla Verde, in Carolina.
We remind you that the information collected by the United States Census Bureau is aggregated according to official administrative divisions established based on the desired level of detail and geographic scale. In the case of Puerto Rico, some of these official divisions include municipalities, barrios (neighborhoods), census tracts, and census blocks, among others. Census tracts are defined by grouping together small regions that share some homogeneity in their population characteristics, economic status, and living conditions. These are contiguous areas where the primary criterion for their definition is that the total population fluctuates around 4,000 people.
