Estuary and National Park Service Collaborative Workshops
The second collaborative workshop between Estuario and the National Park Service of Puerto Rico happened on Wednesday, April 14 2021. San Juan Past & Present: Histories of Nature, Science & Resilience attracted 42 participants. Next workshop is: Scientific Innovations in Old San Juan Fortresses of the 18th Century, on Wednesday, April 21 2021 at 3PM.
Asset Identification Workshops for the San Juan Bay Estuary Watershed Hazard Mitigation Plan
As of this week, Estuario has begun the scheduling of its Asset Identification Workshops for the municipalities of the SJBE Watershed. The workshops, which will be provided through Zoom, will provide basic training on what community assets are, and will feature a participatory mapping exercise. Estuario has begun promotion of its first scheduled workshops – check them out below.

The residents of the Cantera community in San Juan arrived from all over Puerto Rico in search of work during the first half of the last century. Lacking housing, they improvised shacks on the shores of the San José Lagoon, which was then bioluminescent and teeming with fish. José Santiago Reíllo, a teacher and veteran community leader, recalls how human activity degraded that body of water and how, decades later, the determination and unity of the community have helped to restore it.
