Wednesday, April 7, 2021 — The San Juan Bay Estuary (Estuary) celebrates World Health Day 2021 , together with the Guaitiao District of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) in Puerto Rico and the Graduate School of Public Health at the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Rico, by reiterating its offer of workshops for Scouts to earn the Public Health Merit Badge. These workshops will be offered on Saturdays, April 10 and 17, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., via the Zoom platform.
This opportunity coincides with the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) 50th anniversary and supports the acquisition of a special commemorative award, granted by the agency to BSA youth. This award stems from an agreement between the EPA and the BSA to promote environmental protection. It includes a patch and requires Scouts to earn merit badges focused on the environment, biodiversity, and community health, as well as participate in a service project.
“We join in the celebration of the EPA’s 50th anniversary, an agency with which we work closely. This is the first time the Estuary has offered this Public Health Merit Badge, the only requirement to receive the federal agency’s award. We are very excited to continue working hand in hand with the Guaitiao District of the BSA Puerto Rico Council and educating this generation about the conservation of our waterways,”

World Health Day commemorates the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) and promotes equitable access to safe environments, clean air and water, food security, and health services through collaborative work among communities, the accurate collection and reliable use of health data, a primary focus by governments on public health, and action beyond national borders.
