San Juan, Puerto Rico – The San Juan Bay Estuary (PEBSJ) is joining the San Sebastián Street Festival celebrations by delivering a powerful message about recycling and protecting waterways, as announced by the Estuary's Executive Director, Brenda Torres Barreto. As part of these efforts, a collection center and cigarette butt collection station will be set up in Plaza de la Barandilla, starting today and continuing throughout the weekend.
“The Municipality of San Juan invited us to raise awareness about proper waste disposal in a festive setting during the San Sebastián Street Festival. We warmly accepted this invitation, as it is our mission to achieve behavioral changes that promote the sustainable development of the metropolitan area,” stated the Director. “Plaza de la Barandilla is a central location in Old San Juan, where we hope to explain to those who approach us ways to reuse, reduce, and recycle waste. We are adding a large ashtray to the recycling station so that participants can dispose of their cigarette butts. With this, we aim to raise awareness about cigarette butts as litter and their impact on waterways through gutters and the city's sewer system, which carries rainwater to our coasts,” added Torres Barreto.
