Estuary celebrates Earth Day

Every day is Earth Day!

The San Juan Bay Estuary celebrated International Earth Day with activities planned with its staff and partners throughout the week of April 18-22. Here is a summary of the Estuary's participation in various events with our partners.

Environmental conference and photographic exhibition: H2O Collective

On Tuesday, April 19, Cristina Ramírez, coordinator of aquatic waste alliances and projects for the Estuary, participated in the environmental conference hosted by Colectivo H2O, who also presented an environmental photography exhibit at Pública Espacio Cultural in Miramar. CARICOOS, Sea Grant Puerto Rico, and Estuario also participated. We thank artists Manuel “gOnzo” González ( @gonzolenz ) and Salvi Colón for the invitation.

Glass diversion

On Wednesday, April 20th, Cristina Ramírez, our public policy analyst, Laura Almodóvar, and community liaison, Jesús Pérez, along with collaborators from the community campaign "Don't Let It Touch the Floor or Reach the Water," transported more than 10 crates of glass, collected at recent community fairs organized by Taller Comunidad La Goyco, to Bloque Caribe. There, the glass was received and used as an additive in the construction of concrete blocks. We thank Desvidrio, Machuchal Limpio, Taller Comunidad La Goyco, and Fundación Segarra Boerman for their support, collaboration, and follow-up on this effort.

Information session on Water Quality Monitoring Day

On Thursday, April 21, in preparation for the launch of registration for the 2022 Puerto Rico Water Quality Monitoring Day, Estuario held an informational session for citizens at its Visitor Center in Old San Juan. Ivangs Rivera, Estuario's water quality monitoring and citizen science coordinator, led the session, which covered water quality monitoring processes, event organization, and participant registration. The 2022 Puerto Rico Water Quality Monitoring Day will be held on Saturday, August 27. Stay tuned to our social media channels to register!

Citizen Scientist Certification Workshop: Introduction to Tropical Coastal Ecosystems

Also on Wednesday, April 21, Estuario held an introductory workshop for the Citizen Scientist Certification, covering the new thematic module: Coastal Resilience. The workshop was conducted with the new coastal resilience coordinator, Juanita Carballeira.

Congress PR Conservative

The Estuary's scientific director, Jorge Bauzá, participated in the first day of the PR Conserva congress, held in San Juan on April 21 and 22, organized by Para la Naturaleza. There he spoke about the ecosystems of the San Juan Bay estuary watershed.

Information desk at El Escambrón Spa

On Thursday, April 22nd, Earth Day, the Estuary participated with an information table in the "Get Active with the Planet" event organized by the Municipality of San Juan at El Escambrón Beach. There, we had the opportunity to inform participants about all our efforts. Thank you to the Municipality for the invitation.

Conference with EcoExploratorio

On Thursday, April 22, Ivangs Rivera testified about the Estuary and his programmatic actions at the EXPO Planeta Digital conference, held in the central atrium of Plaza Las Américas.

Special screening at Estuary Cinema

On the evening of Earth Day, estuarine citizens joined us for a special screening of Estuary Cinema in Jaime Benítez Park in the Condado Lagoon.

Bird census

The week ended with a participatory bird census at the Río Piedras Botanical Garden, facilitated by the education manager, Eliezer Nieves, and the education coordinator, Coral Avilés.
