The San Juan Bay Estuary (Estuary) is seeking qualified applicants to provide support to collaborative efforts with communities for the Urban Waters Federal Partnership Ambassador, who supports the implementation of the Caño Martín Peña Ecosystem Restoration Project (CMP).
ABOUT ESTUARY
The San Juan Bay Estuary Conservation Corporation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that manages the Estuary. The Estuary became part of the National Estuary Program (NEP) in 1994 and is the only tropical estuary within the NEP under Section 320 of the Clean Water Act. The Estuary's mission is to restore and conserve the waters and associated ecosystems of the San Juan Bay Estuary and its watershed as a sustainable driver of social and economic development. This work is guided by a restoration master plan known as the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) for the San Juan Bay Estuary.
FEDERAL URBAN WATER PROGRAM – SUPPORT FOR THE CAÑO MARTÍN PEÑA ECOSYSTEM RESTORATION PROJECT
The Caño Martín Peña Ecosystem Restoration Project (ERP) is a complex, multimillion-dollar project that is a priority for the Estuary as a critical environmental justice challenge facing the watershed. The Estuary is an active member of the ERP's Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee and provides water quality monitoring data for the Caño Martín Peña. The Estuary has participated in partnership meetings with representatives from the US EPA, US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), US Small Business Administration, US Forest Service, Puerto Rico DRNA, the ENLACE Project for the Caño Martín Peña, the Group of 8 Communities Bordering the Caño Martín Peña, and others. These ongoing multistakeholder efforts led to an increase in the authorized amount for the project from $150 million to $256 million after the US Congress amended the Water Resources Development Act. As part of the partnership, the Urban Water Ambassador will continue her efforts to support the CMP's ERP. This position will provide support to the Urban Water Ambassador and initiatives in the Caño Martín Peña and will provide assistance by attending community meetings and activities, coordinating initiatives carried out in the CMP and identifying opportunities for future engagement.
Responsibilities:
- Identify and generate a list of community meetings or events (updated weekly) coordinated by the G-8, Liaison or Quarry, identifying date, time, location and purpose.
- Attend community meetings discussed and agreed upon with the Urban Water Ambassador and take notes related to the meeting content. If the meeting coordinators allow it, document with photographs.
- Identify and generate a list of initiatives/projects being developed in the CMP area by other entities (universities, federal agencies, non-profit organizations, etc.). The list should include a brief description of the initiative/project and should be updated monthly.
- Develop a contact list of the people in charge of the initiatives/projects identified above.
- Working with the Urban Water Ambassador to identify opportunities that could promote greater engagement or new collaborations, based on the information gathered.
Required Qualifications (Education and Experience):
- Experience in projects aimed at the community and its well-being, sustainability, working in the metropolitan area with communities and project management.
- Basic knowledge and understanding of the Estuary and its mission.
- Ability to work independently.
- Provide your own personal computer and transportation.
- Ability to prioritize time efficiently, work independently, and manage conflicting priorities.
